| I've never seen this show. Can anyone give me some feedback on it? TIA |
| I'm not crazy about my 15 yo watching it. Just saw small parts of the series and so far its included high schoolers in sexual relationships with a teacher, a lesbian and a boyfriend. Also, lots of lying to each other, self, parents and teachers. You should watch an episode on demand if you can or at least read the description of the show. |
| I find it racy, and I wouldn't let a 12 yo watch it. I personally enjoy it but I find the portrayal of high school girls to be more akin to college girls or older. The level of materialism is borderline absurd for the depicted ages, it adds another level beyond the sexual stuff that is inappropriate for an impressionable young girl. Plus, it's a murder mystery. |
| My daughter and all her friends watch it. They are 12. I think it's ok as long as you talk about it. My daughter knows it's not real and what many of the girls do are not appropriate and/or just pretend |
You'd be talking for the entire show: "all girls aren't that pretty or no need to be so concerned about looks; you don't wear that much make up . . .ever; you should never steal money from my wallet; most 16 year olds don't drive in their own convertibles; not a good idea to flirt, have sex with teacher or to lie to boyfriend about it; shouldn't have sex with girlfriend in your room; shouldn't be out late at night without parents knowing where you are; should not lie to police, parents, doctors, teachers, etc. about a murder investigation, about the teacher having sex with a student, etc., etc., etc." Really, there's little redeeming value to the show at all for those younger than high school age. So basically, 12 year olds should be watching iCarly. |
| My daughter watched this at ages 15-16. I tried to watch with her whenever possible. We both even read the book series. Now at 17 she has tired of it. Yay! |
| Isn't this on ABC Family? That's nuts. |
|
Same as I feel about 12 yr old boys playing grand theft auto.
No need to fill tweens minds with sex, drugs, drinking, swearing, illicit relationships, smoking. |
Actually, I think EVERYTHING on ABC family is crap. I would avoid this show, but if you watch it with her, talk about it. I agree you will be talking the whole show. Try asking her what she thinks and steering convo based on that instead of just lecturing - it works better. |
| Just say NO! |
| My DD is 13 and started watching when she was 12. She loves the show and knows not to be like that. I dont watch it put my friends and hers do. Its just a tv show and i raised her to know better than to imitate whats on tv. |
| so is it like a 90210 thing. my 12yo watches n reads it |

Alright, it depends on the parent and the child. There is mild cursing (bitch, ass, damn.) there is kissing a lot, and yes the teens do have sex but it doesn't strait out say so, u can just infer that they did, by things they say, such as "R u sure ur ready" "Yea but do you have a-"
There is a lesbian who kisses other girls, and a 16 year old has a relationship with her teacher, who just graduated college. I would say thats the worse there is. The teens in this show do things that most teens don't. There is murdering, but you never actually see the person murdered, and no blood There are scenes with dead bodies though, but there is never any blood The main theme has to do with murder, and threats from an anonymous person knows as -A I think of your child is mature, then its ok If your going to let your child watch it, you should make sure that they know that what the teens do in this show is bad and sometimes illegal I would let them know that anonymously threatening someone, Murdering someone, having a relationship with your teacher are all illegal Otherwise, if your child knows that, it's a good show Not good as in a good example of behavior though If your child seems to do whatever they see on tv, i would let them watch it |

Well, the show is absurdly written. I started watching it online after reading the TWOP summaries. Reading the summaries really give me a chuckle.
Personally, the lesbian relationship doesn't bother me. The constant lying and texting and practically non-existence of parents is troubling: http://www.commonsensemedia.org/tv-reviews/pretty-little-liars I watched the first two episodes of The Carrie Diaries, which is even worse b/c PPL is a far-fetched murder mystery and almost laughable at times. In the Carrie Diaries, the kid regularly lies to her dad so she can clubbing in New York. Unfortunately, for girls, it's pretty slim pickins for appropriate shows/role models when they hit the tween years. |
I disagree, Switched At Birth is great! (Try watching that with her, OP, it has plenty of drama, sex, lying to parents and sneaking around, but at a much more typical level AND everyone always gets caught.) |
