Everything on ABC Family includes lots of teen sex. I don't let my 12 year old watch anything on that channel.
Teen sex happens, but I don't want my dd thinking that it's expected. |
1 in 4 teenage girls has an STD: http://health.usnews.com/health-news/family-health/cancer/articles/2009/11/23/one-in-four-teen-girls-have-stds Yes, sex happens whether or not they watch TV. Get them protection and the HPV vax. |
| I think 12 is fine. I am 16 and have been watching and reading those since they came out, when I was 12. If anything at the time I was a little scared of it, but appropriateness is fine.. She is exposed to all of that anyway, and as long as she knows it is fiction, there is no reason why it would negatively affect her. |
Maybe you were "exposed to all of that" at 12 but many kids aren't. Should we parents let them watch this show as an educational thing, so they know all about what their sheltered little selves are missing? OP, just say no. Why even bother to ask here for opinions of the show? If you don't want her watching it, then don't let her. I'm amazed how many parents post on here to ask "should my kid watch this/listen to this/do this" when the parents already feel it's against their values or it's just time-wasting junk. Why ask? Give your kid an answer and move on. If you over-talk it with her and agonize over it in front of her it's a waste of energy and time, and she knows that the "my friends all watch it" argument can get to you. |
|
In fairness to OP, I think sometimes as a parent, you really don't know. Maybe the show seems a bit much to you, but you're afraid you're overreacting so you bounce it off friends or DCUM.
I have sons, so PLL is less a draw. I know lots of my freshman son's gal pals were big fans of it in middle school. I think there is a lot of ape-ing of the show in terms of how girls talk to each other and some of the aggressiveness/fights betweem them/ I don't remember girls calling each other bitches or bitching each other out in the cafeteria when I was in school -- seems a lot more in your face aggressive like the kids are on many teen shows today. |

This is great resource for evaluating movies and TV.

Said the parent of the 6 month old... |
No, said the parent of the 13-year-old. I posted that. I know what my kid watches and say no to things at times. Thanks, though, for contributing the obligatory DCUM snark instead of any actual discussion of the issue or opinion on OP's question. |
| Don't know if you guys noticed, but OP actually asked this question in 2011. Hopefully, she's figured it out by now. |
+1! Too young. In fact, that show is bad for everyone at every age. You're the parent. Use your parental controls and lock it out. |
See? This is what I love about DCUM; if this kid is actually not a 45-year-old male who identifies as a 16 year old, then she's probably not headed to MIT by any definition. Consider yourself warned. |
| is pretty little liars suitable for me im 12 years old tv serios/ or the books |
| Forget content - that show is just plain awful. |
|
I watch it for myself. I like the silly escapism.
I would not let a 12 year old DD watch it. It is a show about teenagers but not for teenagers - not the young ones, above 15 maybe. None of the characters act in ways that would be appropriate. |
| I'm definitely in the minority, but that would be fine with me. My DD 12 watched an episode or two but seems to have lost interest. |
