BOE - who are people voting for?

I certainly hope Harris wins over Montoya. I didn’t vote for Harris in the primary, but I will be in the general.

Harris is allowing these cuts to happen. Everyone that’s currently in office should be voted out in November.

People should take a hard look at what’s happening here. Salaries and benefits are up for teachers and driving the budget crunch. The union is playing both sides - decrying staffing cuts while refusing to make any changes to the health care plans whose costs are a big part of what’s forcing those cuts. Makes me really second guess my plan to vote for the apple ballot candidates that the union picked - they will be in the mcea’s pocket and I’m worried will be motivated more about keeping their apple ballot designation than making the hard choices required to get the budget back on track.

MCPS could save a million plus by getting rid of its Equity group without impact classroom teaching staff. There are lots of cuts like this MCPS should be making before impacting teachers.

Thank you! Also - no new initiatives or pet projects. Back to basics to get back on track.

Exactly. I voted for Harris. Seeing these appalling cuts, she will not get my vote again. I like Harris but these cuts were heartless and lazy.

No! Legal fees are up 400% in MCPS, not salaries and benefits. Contractual services have also ballooned. Cut the contracts the cover tasks CO employees are hired to do, not classroom positions.

OK, Shebra. (Back to the desperate side attacks to detract from the do-nothing mess you've left.)

Ok Laura, or Lynne. The irony is that Lynn touts the arts but has no problem cutting musical instrument repairs for brown and black kids. A vote for Lynne and Laura is a vote for screwing over kids of color.

Ok, Laura- screw the brown and black kids- Stewart. Laura, Lynne and Jill are aiming to remake the board in their image. That part is clear.

Look at the budget. Most of the increase comes from the increases to salaries and benefits (>$120M).

And look where the contracted services are going. Most are instructional costs and special education services. Most of the remaining go to student health services and facilities management.

I wouldn't have a problem with this. Can you come up with $24M in other cuts to save MVA?

Which is not surprising. Obviously labor (people) will be the biggest cost in the budget of a public school system, and facilities (buildings) will be the second biggest cost. People who yell about wastefraudandabuse have no understanding of scale or orders of magnitude.

And thus dooms MCPS to 4 more years of sharp decline.

Overall, I have been happy with MCPS since moving here. You people just don't appreciate how good you have it.

Really?

They are paying out 1.3 Million to someone they could have terminated. But clearly, McKnight had some dirt on BOE because they "negotiated" this settlement.

Jane Doe is getting another $300K. (Granted, she DESERVES it and likely more.) But why didn't MCPS/BOE listen to complaints against Beidleman in the first place???

Don’t forget the payout for the families of multiple locker room rapes. And all the pending litigation
