Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)

do you mind sharing how large the class was and with how many aides? Our neighbor was told recently at an IEP meeting that
they expect around 28 Kindergarteners per class. That seems obscenely high to me.

| it varies by schools. but you go to public schools for FREE. you can PAY for private schools' smaller class-size. |
| Also, the K will have an aide. |
You PAY for public schools with your tax dollars. Don't you know, nothing in life is FREE? And: relevance? 28 kids in a K class is a lot of 5 year olds. I'm pretty sure in Arlington they are capped at 22? Maybe 20. |
| DS was in FCPS K last year. Class size ranged from 20-22 students, 1 teacher and 1 aide. |
| My son was in K this past year. They started the year with 20 students in his class and ended with 22. There was one teacher and one aide. |
| 3 kids in last 6 years. K has btn 19-26 students, 1 teacher, 1 aide. Remember the classrooms lose the aide and ratios only increase 1st grade and beyond. 6th grade can have more than 30. |

Was standard for my child and the other classes to be 27-28 kids with one aide in each class. That was two years ago (2009-2010). While it seems high, it works out o.k. Kindergarten is just the beginning. It won't destroy your child or make them president. Kindergarten is not that complicated... they spend a good bit of time in "specials." I don't think my child learned a ton, but it was more of a maturing year for her so that she really took off with reading in first grade (with my concerted effort to coach her).

I was just reading through the materials I got at my daughter's school in our new neighborhood. The cap for that school is 28. They apparently are approaching that number for the 3 teachers they currently have, because the registrar said that they are approaching the "magic number" to hire a new teacher. Which would then DECREASE the class-size numbers.
With the schools that switch to full-day K regularly getting a bump in enrollments, I believe the 36 schools getting full-day this year (which includes the school my daughter will be attending) will likely be hitting their cap numbers and hiring new teachers to accomodate. You never can tell how big the classes are going to be - I have heard they vary from year to year. |

Had 22 in class last year with full-time aide. At previous FCPS school, 4 years ago, there were 29 with full-time aide.
Both were full-day K, if that matters. |
| 24 with one aide (and 2 aides dedicated to SN kids in the class). This was last year. |
| The higher numbers sometimes come from kids who register after final staffing is completed in august. They will just keep adding kids to classes without the ability to increase staff. |
| 22 with teacher and 1 aide last year. Title I school. |
| 18 with teacher and an aide two years ago (FCPS) |
This is a good point, but I think there are children who are more socially/emotionally mature and a smaller vs larger class can make a big difference. |
