Is this as bad as I was (recently) told? I hate nail polish. I don't like the way it looks, I hate the smell, and I hate the upkeep. But a woman in her mid-40s made a comment to me the other day about some other woman wearing sandals with no nail polish, that it was "sooo tacky. Like going out in your underwear or something". Little did she know I do this all the time. Is this really THAT bad? Or is this woman out of touch? |
I do it sometimes too. But I've even heard a male friend complaining about women on the metro with sandals and no nailpolish. I guess it depends whether you're wearing flip-flops and hanging out at the park, or nice sandals and heading to the office.
As for upkeep - toenail polish doesn't wear off nearly as fast as fingernail. You can put on a coat of clear that will last for weeks but make you look more...polished. |
She's out of touch. That's just crazy. I like to have my toes painted, but if you don't, who cares? As long as they're clean and trimmed, I can't imagine what the issue is. As though there aren't more important things to think about! |
I do feel naked now without polish and it does last amazingly longer than on your fingernails-plus have someone else do them-you won't have to smell the polish ![]() ![]() |
I have to agree. I think bare toe nails on a woman look gross no matter how well groomed they are. I told my mom that once. She is kind of an all-natural person (no make-up, very northeastern LL Bean style) but the naked toe nails were just crossing the line. Just get a pedicure at a local nail salon once a month or so and then you dont have to smell it/get it on your hands. |
God no. As long as they're clean, trimmed, and healthy, they're fine. |
Gross. No, they are not okay! |
i can't imagine going out without toenail polish -- i may be one of the extreme but i don't thnk i ever have bare toenails even in the winter! |
These types of responses really confuse me. Is this what we're going to teach our daughters? That their feet are disgusting unless they do something to make them look "better?" I posted above that I paint my toenails b/c I like to, but I certainly don't think it's gross to have bare nails. Are men's feet perfect and ours have to be disguised to look good? |
I have to agree that it's gross. It just looks dirty. And I'm going to make a pedicure appt. right now - ! |
Well, I suppose all of you will just have to think I am gross, disgusting, and unkempt.
My feet are nice and soft. My nails are nice, but NEVER POLISHED. Polish, and especially removers, are fairly harsh chemicals. Producing them isn't good for the environment, and breathing the fumes while you put them on your body isn't so great, either. Frankly, some of you sound like stepford wives - creating a huge set of artificial constraints on your ability to move about the world freely. I, personally, with a busy life filled with a meaningful job and a wonderful child, do not waste my time on superfluous grooming. |
Painted toenails are hardly the worst message that society is teaching our little girls! If you read the NYT book review yesterday, you'll see that it's the oversexualized "hot" girl phenomena that is really hurting our girls. Nail polish is not even in the same league. I worry about my little girl, but my worries don't involve pedicures, that's for sure. |
to 9:14 - no, men's feet are utterly disgusting. At least WE are fortunate to have a venue through which to make ours look respectable and, as as reward, get to wear fabulous sandals. Men are SOL which is why few men wear sandals and those who do (my husband included) get made fun of for wearing "mandals." I, at least, do manage to get my husband in the pedicurist's chair on occaision but, for some reason, he just refuses to wear nail polish!!! ![]() p.s. - I hope you realize my post is being written in a lighthearted, joking and fun "voice." ![]() |
It's not that pedicures concern me, it's the concept that women's feet look "disgusting" without them |
I have feet issues for sure. What I think is gross are the overgrown, thick, yellowed toenails often seen on middle-aged women. I often see women on the Metro heading to work at the library of congress or someplace in the hippie sandals with these natural toenails, carrying a canvas bag advertising the local public television station. I think to myselves -- she's a really great person, I'm sure -- probably recycles, spays and neuters, composts, supports WETA but man, get a pedicure already or cover up those hoofs!
