And that’s different from, say, UVA? Harvard? Yes, ND has a fiercely loyal alumni base. Next question?

Yes, Harvard and UVA are different. PP is saying the kids were told they are going to ND because it’s Catholic.

Where did PP say that? If you think that that's the reason for the loyal alumni base you're seriously mistaken.

DP here, but it’s common sense. Parents encourage UVA because it’s an excellent state school (this more affordable). They encourage Harvard or other Ivies because they know a degree from there is worth a lot (and because they truly believe they are excellent schools). If their kid got a full ride to another school, or got into an equally prestigious school, they might be disappointed on some level but they get over it. I know a lot of alums from both schools and none of them would be upset to send their kid elsewhere.

The alumni and booster culture around ND is different.

I went to Notre Dame. I loved the school. My kids went elsewhere. Not only wasn't I devastated, I encouraged them to go where they wanted to go. I know many other ND grads who did the same thing. You do realize that the overwhelming majority of ND grads do not send their kids to ND, right?

Where else do you get great football AND seriously strong academics? ND is the only place that comes to mind. I think there is a lot to be said for that for the strong student who wants that college experience.

Right, there are other schools that might offer decent academics along with the football, but ND is the highest ranking school with good football and it is private. That, along with the fact that the student body is a quarter the size of these schools, which is a plus in itself in my opinion. Great football, more intimate campus setting, top 20 school.

Why do you care so much about football pps? Boring and misognyist.

That's why there are schools for people who don't like football. Your opinion. My kid loves the excitement of game day.

Oh please - spare me.

Michigan undergrad is bunch of in-state students (diversity being measured if you're from West Bloomfield, Troy or Grosse Pointe), many of whom couldn't get into ND, plus a bunch of rich NE kids who got the Ivy reject but can pay cash to support your highly ranked graduate programs.

Michigan has been living off the reputational halo-effect of its grad programs for at least a half a century. Most of its undergrad programs are just like any other big, monolithic state school.

NP. I totally agree. My dumb slac and law school had football. I never went to a single game. Nor did my employers care about football.

These and publics too: Washington, UT, Michigan and many of them are in locations people want to go to unlike South Bend, IN.

Anonymous wrote:Over the last 10 years at my kids' Catholic preps I've seen the #1 and #2 seniors head to Notre Dame nearly every year. These overachiever kids don't want to go to Ivies, Stanford, or Duke, they don't even apply to other top universities. It's basically Notre Dame or bust. The school is honestly underrated on US News. Love that kids live on campus all 4 years.

The flaws: Location does suck. Quite literally the worst location, by far, of any university in the top 50. They give too much boost to (rich) legacies. Football players (and other recruited athletes) are idiots, which really calls into question all the so-called campus integrity. They also accept transfers who don't deserve to be on campus. Also, stupid gals at neighboring St Mary's desperately throw themselves at ND boys and pretend they're ND students; it's like Northeastern students pretending they're Harvard Students. Super weird dynamic. And yes, I get St Mary's was a "sister school" back when ND was boys only, but that was over 50 years ago.

Huh? How could you possibly know this?

And the living on campus thing is weird and paternalistic. Yes I know it’s common at private colleges.

Just trust me. Frankly, truly elite private colleges really should not admit transfers; it's only allowed at some top colleges to backdoor students who weren't qualified to get in during high school. They're basically never up to par and they never actually fit in after missing out of first and even second year -- especially at ND, where the campus experience is forming tight bonds with housemates over 4 years.

Umm no. You have no data on this. Every elite college admits transfers. Transferring into elite schools is especially important for nontraditional students. Transfers have already shown that they can handle college-level work (not AP classes, actual college classes), and these elite colleges admit very few transfers anyway. You’re not getting into ND as a transfer with a low gpa.

Thank you. I transferred into a top tier school bc I started at an smaller school on full scholarship bc my parents are working class and my public high school didn’t offer a lot of advanced courses. At the small school, the work was not enough for me. I ended up PBK, high honors, magna cum laude and a club president. Speaking in sweeping privileged generalizations is ignorant. Thank you to the other poster for defending transfers.
