DP here, but it’s common sense. Parents encourage UVA because it’s an excellent state school (this more affordable). They encourage Harvard or other Ivies because they know a degree from there is worth a lot (and because they truly believe they are excellent schools). If their kid got a full ride to another school, or got into an equally prestigious school, they might be disappointed on some level but they get over it. I know a lot of alums from both schools and none of them would be upset to send their kid elsewhere.

Where else do you get great football AND seriously strong academics?  ND is the only place that comes to mind.  I think there is a lot to be said for that for the strong student who wants that college experience.[/quote]

These and publics too:  Washington, UT, Michigan and many of them are in locations people want to go to unlike South Bend, IN.[/quote]
