So my daughter just started. 4.0 unweighted with an extra class each semester. UN girl. Captain of her sports team - but not playing in college. Girl scout gold award. But; she is an introvert at heart. Also not catholic. Chose it b/c of all the good things she had heard about it from many, including current students and alum. Just a week, but she is happy.

Yes, Harvard and UVA are different. PP is saying the kids were told they are going to ND because it’s Catholic.

Where did PP say that? If you think that that's the reason for the loyal alumni base you're seriously mistaken.

DP here, but it’s common sense. Parents encourage UVA because it’s an excellent state school (this more affordable). They encourage Harvard or other Ivies because they know a degree from there is worth a lot (and because they truly believe they are excellent schools). If their kid got a full ride to another school, or got into an equally prestigious school, they might be disappointed on some level but they get over it. I know a lot of alums from both schools and none of them would be upset to send their kid elsewhere.

The alumni and booster culture around ND is different.

Where else do you get great football AND seriously strong academics? ND is the only place that comes to mind. I think there is a lot to be said for that for the strong student who wants that college experience.

When I think great football Notre Dame does not come to mind.
Anyway - Florida, Wisconsin. Texas, USC.

Do a forum search. Someone starts a thread about this safety school regularly. You can find everything you're looking for there--is it good, why is it worse than Georgetown, what about the bad location, etc. etc. The same questions come up every single time.

Glad to hear she is having a good first week. The traditions and the residential life makes it easy to make friends. My son is a junior there and is having the time of his life. And so happy they are making campus as normal as possible this year.

The flaws: Location does suck. Quite literally the worst location, by far, of any university in the top 50. They give too much boost to (rich) legacies. Also, stupid gals at neighboring St Mary's desperately throw themselves at ND boys and pretend they're ND students; it's like Northeastern students pretending they're Harvard Students. Super weird dynamic. And yes, I get St Mary's was a "sister school" back when ND was boys only, but that was over 50 years ago.

Do you know why an all women's college in the middle of nowhere needs a Rape Crisis Center? Because people like you say and apparently believe misogynistic BS like this.

Every college targets.

In addition the new evolving view of diversity: the standards set by groups that corporations, law firms, and the like want to follow explicitly list veterans. This is not just in the US but globally.
