Yes, Harvard and UVA are different. PP is saying the kids were told they are going to ND because it’s Catholic.
Where did PP say that? If you think that that's the reason for the loyal alumni base you're seriously mistaken.
DP here, but it’s common sense. Parents encourage UVA because it’s an excellent state school (this more affordable). They encourage Harvard or other Ivies because they know a degree from there is worth a lot (and because they truly believe they are excellent schools). If their kid got a full ride to another school, or got into an equally prestigious school, they might be disappointed on some level but they get over it. I know a lot of alums from both schools and none of them would be upset to send their kid elsewhere.
The alumni and booster culture around ND is different.
