Sporty families bragging about offers and committing to awful colleges in the middle of nowhere?

Well if you're pretty sure about that, then we should end the discussion. Anything other topics you want to provide the definitive word on?

OP I fear for you.

It's true though. Playing football for a big SEC school opens so many doors on Wall Street and Tech. They'll put you in any kind of front office sales role where you can schmooze and tell football glory stories.

Even average lacrosse players have a free ticket to Wall Street.

No awful college is giving your kid a full ride due to athletics. And if the college is awful, they probably won’t have the degree they need

+1. I’ve heard parents lie (or intentionally mislead) and say their child received lots of money for sports at D2 and D3 schools. D3 doesn’t even have sports scholarships! And the aid avail at these poor LACs and regional publics is a joke. What these subpar schools do is have fake tuition costs of say $40,000 a year, but then everyone who applies gets $10,000 to $20,000 of “scholarships” in discount. Like a discount retailer running a perpetual 50% sale.

For the millionth time, the OP is not talking about playing sports at the SECs, Sewanee, Kalamazoo, Hampden-Sydney, F&M, Oberlin, Denison, Conn. College of the world. OP is talking about parents bragging because their kid is going to Glenville State College in West Virginia to play baseball.

Now if their kid was born and raised in rural West Virginia? Sure - good for them for going to Glenville! But if there were raised in this area with many other - sorry to say it but better colleges around - yeah, I'm not so impressed.

You are very ill-informed (about both the price of such colleges, and the scholarships they award).

Most of the former athletes I knew in college are selling insurance, selling cars, pharm sales (delivering free Panera Bread lunches to doctors offices every day), or teaching. A couple are lawyers—district attorneys.

Maybe they aren't trying to *impress* you. Geez, can't people just be happy that their kid is figuring out the next step in life and share that with their friends and family. Why do you automatically think any sharing on social media = bragging? Might want to do some self-reflection on that.

How many football players from a SEC school like ole miss do you know? There may be one in a HS class on a good year. You’re talking out of your a**.

Plenty of articles on the hundreds of dying cash-strapped colleges that are predicted to run out of business by Moody’s. The immediate discounts off fake inflated sticker prices is a routine tactic to hustle parents. Coaches tell the parents whatever they want to hear, but the truth is everyone is getting those fake discounts. Larla you have to go to this abysmal college in the middle of nowhere, the coach offered you a $5k scholarship off tuition if you play softball! We only have to pay $25k a year plus room & board! You almost feel sorry for the parents. Then you realize they’re easy marks because their ego is so tied up in being able to brag their good-not-great athlete is “playing at the next level.”

I think these little antidotes say more about your own social circle and socioeconomic level than anything. I have no such stories to share because it’s not my crowd.

Plus pharma sales can pay very well.

And are we really putting down reachers and district attorneys now?! Wtf? You better hope you are never the victim of a crime PP.

I don’t understand posts like the OP’s.

Kid gets into a school they’re happy about. Mom is excited for him/her so she posts a photo holding up an acceptance letter.

We’re supposed to be disdainful and sneer because it’s not an Ivy?

How do you live your life being so cruel and miserable?

If you're gonna pull a snotty attitude, maybe you should proofread first so you don't say "antidotes" when you mean "anecdotes" because it makes you look foolish.
