yes, this! it was so powerful to see the birth dad wiring poetry and gradually become unable to do so due to his addiction.

Part of me was angry at the mom for not letting her son know he existed, but I also get it. Life and adoption was so different back then and he was a drug addict.

Randall always knew that he existed because he knew that he was adopted. That's why he went looking for him. I totally get that his mom didn't want him in Randall's life given his addiction and her desire to be the parent.

Yeah, I think she had to know he was really hers forever in order to bond with him. I think she kept equating Randall with her son that died, both because of his name but also because of the circumsatnces of his adoption. She knew she could lose him too if his biological parents ever decided they wanted him back.

For those that follow the TV viewership, this show won the night in the 18-49 demo:

(Also couldn't believe she wouldn't have a section but figured tv was asking us to suspend our disbelief.) Figured it out when the guy said a baby had been left at the fire station and then lit a cigarette, but had no idea before that.

Tough thing for me to buy: the birth dad is so well spoken and lovely, which seems odd for an addict who spent much of his life on the streets. Will this part go another direction as well? Maybe they'll tell us how he pulled himself up or something? Sort of weird.

I disagree. Real people have dimension. We still don't know what the father's background was before he started using. Plenty of people with "normal" lives end up as addicts.

THANK YOU! This is akin to the orange idiot constantly talking about the african americans in the "inner city". cause that's where we all live.

This wordless montage was heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time. I wonder if I will get through a single episode of this series without crying buckets.

ha! this is my worry too. it has its light and funny moments. but jeesh! i cried when kate was singing. what is wrong with me?!?!

More on ratings. It's the first time a scripted series that aired after the Voice had a higher audience than the Voice, which normally rules the night.

Funny. I was watching it thinking it totally reminded me of 30something.

About the cheezy chant:

forst there was me and Dad said " Gee"...

I think it makes more sense if you think of doing this with toddlers who have limited language skils. It feels like something one would chan with little ones.

I didn't think it was cheesy. It's totally the kind of little ritual that families with small children create.

Yes! And I love, love, love the song that played on the bus and towards the end, the one that goes "Take a boat to England, baby..." I just Googled it and it's called "Blues Run the Game." Simon and Garfunkel did a great cover of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXvhc23xcVA.

I loved the song too, just wish they wouldn't play it so loudly when there's dialogue going on. I missed about half of what Randall was saying because his voice is so low and the music was loud.

Kevin is rapidly becoming my favorite character. I didn't expect the "pretty boy" to be so funny, but he keeps making me laugh. Really good actor.

Me too!

But see it from her perspective. She could not bond with the baby because she feared his real dad would come back and claim him.

Cruise.
