Also, was Shepherd reclassified on the list after their phase I?

The list is brand new and puts Shepherd behind about three dozen completely renovated/rebuilt schools.

Because they aren't counting the current renovations of those schools- because those schools aren't in phases.

SIGH.

And Grosso supports moving forward with it. What a hack.

Ellington is a citywide school (Grosso voters), Shepherd is Bowser, Todd.

You can't pin Ellington on Grosso - Bowser is the one who increased Ellington's budget by another $30 million (total budget $178 million, or $300,000 per student!).

I completely agree the Ellington project is stupid and should be reconsidered entirely. It seems like almost everyone involved in DC education thinks so. I will never understand why it's not stopped. Must be a huge campaign backer of Bowser and other politicans who wants it.

Yes you can - if Grosso is going to get into re-prioritization then everything should have been on the table.

The Ellington renovation is really affront to all taxpayers in DC.

Of course I can. It's a large capital expenditure, within the purview of the Education Committee. That's his baby too, and I do hold it against him.

When I think of Ellington, I think of the line from Usual Suspects: "I'm telling you this guy is protected from up on high by the Prince of Darkness."

What gives Ellington so much political pull?

Strong alumni that bring a lot of kudos to the school and city (Dave Chappell, Denyce Graves), political support going back decades. For many years it was one of the few things in DCPS that worked

Grosso is the chair of that committee...the Ellington renovation budget is literally his responsibility as well.

mmmm...the Education Committee has little ultimate control. Kaya or the DME (through the Mayor) makes the budget. The council (via Grosso) makes tweaks.

Clearly the Mayor (more likely Kaya because she's said it before) is saying FU to Grosso by ignoring his list. For whatever strategic reasons he's clawing back what items he can.

After watching the process closely for the last three years, I agree with this assessment.

Thanks! I'm the PP and my wife thinks I'm crazy for paying attention to this process, but it shocks me how little sunlight shines on this topic. (Validated for the first time in three years!!!)

If he had the balls to, he could reject it outright or pass something drastically different. That is the "checks and balances" role he should be playing.

The one piece of (slight) humor thus far--Shepherd's cafeteria has apparently started tweeting:

https://twitter.com/SEScafeteria

Profile pic is of where the "fire doors" from the basement-level cafeteria lead--a narrow passageway littered with debris and construction ladders, and a locked gate at the end (supposed to be unlocked during the day, but who knows). Basically, unsafe egress for kids and staff in case of emergency.

Then put the cafeteria in your auditorium, which has all sorts of egress. Or in your magnificent atrium. No one is making you feed your children in a basement. The food is catered at the moment.

You have no idea how much I want to be on Shepherd's side in this, except the facts don't support it.

And, while speaking of facts, can we talk about the crazy people who keep locking the Shepherd playground with their own combination locks? Why is no one in the community stopping this from happening? Why isn't this a news story?
