IAC Lacrosse

I believe that while lacrosse has a major impact in college recruiting these days, please don't forget some of the other non-traditional sports referenced in some of the previous posts.

STA, for example, has a baseball player, Scott Bowman (Princeton) who just made the Major League roster for the St. Louis Cardinals; in addition, Danny Hultzen, (UVA) has been a major prospect for the Seattle Mariners, although he has suffered a number of major injuries and may never make it to the highest level of baseball.

I suspect if you look carefully throughout the DMV, you will find athletes in all sports receiving serious recruiting overtures in many, many sports - and not just in lacrosse or the DMV's finest sport, basketball.

There is an entire thread on this.

The answer is the team has a lot of young players who are contributing and starting to gel with the veteran players. They may finish with a winning record, for the first time in years. Still, they will be lucky if they win an IAC game.

Future looks bright, but will depend certainly on how the school fills the head coaching vacancy.

The future is not bright at STA. They don't have the numbers or talent to improve in the foreseeable future.

Prep looked pretty average today. Not sure if it's a lack of talent or coaching.

Billie and SSSA are on fire. Landon seems as good as ever. Prep is falling fast. Love him or hate him, the former coach made all of the difference. Pretty soon they'll be at the rock bottom of the IAC.

Bullis is ranked #2 in the country at the moment. Very impressive. My question is whether the non-lacrosse families at Bullis feel that the unabashed recruiting and building up of the program is worth it? Does lacrosse success translate into any real benefit apart from bragging rights?

Bullis has a very deep senior class this year. After this season, the talent level will drop off significantly.

Aren't they still heavily recruiting? I also think success breeds success. No, not a Bullis parent. Just another IAC parent wishing my school would follow Bullis's recruitment strategy.

Only a loud mouth Bullis parent would brag about being ranked 2 in the nation by some lax bro who works out of his parents basement.

Why don't you see where you are ranked in late May when the season has come to an end and you have gone through league play.

I think they only recruit aggressively for football and basketball.

I don't see why they won't continue to recruit -- lacrosse makes sense for them. It brings in full-paying students and adds some Ivy League college destinations to their college list. Football and basketball -- which Bullis emphasizes greatly -- are much higher profile spectator sports and in the main sports media. But lacrosse and ice hockey in this area bring in a lot of full payers. I would not be surprise to see an increased emphasis on ice hockey for Bullis as well (as has been the case at Landon).

The Bullis Head of School was open about his strategy to use a very high profile sports program to raise the school's overall profile and build excitement. I don't know if that is sustainable long term but hats off to him, it certainly seems to have worked very well for Bullis thus far.

The parent who wants his school to "follow Bullis's recruitment strategy" has to think about whether it makes sense for his school. Are they trying to explicitly emphasize sports more? Are they willing to commit admissions slots and financial aid money to athletes, if necessary at the expense of admissions spots and money for other candidates? Are they willing to put in a place a very comprehensive tutoring and academic help program (if they don't already have that?) -- Bullis puts a ton of resources into helping these athletes and other students with learning issues navigate through high school.

You can't just pick and choose -- again, to Bullis's credit, when you see a winning lacrosse team you are seeing just the tip of the iceberg that goes below the surface and dominates most aspects of school life. And it has to make sense as a strategy for your school.

I can think of one kid who was aggressively wooed to come to Bullis to play lax, but that's just one. It's not accurate nor fair to say Bullis recruits for lacrosse.

Landon, on the other hand, brought in the goalie from The Heights and a middie from STA. Both were aggressively recruited.

What does "aggressive recruitment" look like between DCs private high schools? Lax athletes don't exactly get financial aid recruitment packages. What would woo a kid from STA to Landon? Presumably it is an increased chance to win leGue championships - don't have to be that "aggressive" to get that message across.

Let me first state that I know several families and players at several of the area private schools. My son plays on a club lacrosse team that happens to have kids at several of the schools which are talked about a fair amount on this thread . To state one school aggressively recruits more so than another schools is not entirely accurate.

I too heard a player from the Heights and STA happened to transfer into Landon this summer - both talented lacrosse players.

Two years ago, two kids from Landon happened to transfer into Gonzaga - both talented lacrosse players.

A year ago, in the middle of the year a kid from Landon transfers into Bullis - another lacrosse player.

This past summer, a goalie from a NOVA public school, transfers into Bullis. This past January, a MOCO public player committed to Maryland, transfers into Bullis as a mid year transfer.

This past summer, Georgetown Prep, brings in a touted lacrosse goalie from Atlanta. Two years a ago, a player from Connecticut.

I could probably site even more examples but you get my point. All of the traditional strong lacrosse programs in the area, have been recruiting for years.

This is all correct except the kid who transferred from Landon to Bullis was not a midyear transfer. He transferred in the summer after school was completed, not during the middle of the year.
