Do you think having an abortion will mean you are going to hell?

if god forgives, then you can do whatever you want as long as you go to confession and feel bad about it - right?

This.

According to Christianity, you can commit any sin you want and still go to heaven and long as you believe and trust in Jesus Christ and ask forgiven for your sins. People sin repeatedly and ask forgiveness and God grants it as long as you're sincere and continue to believe.

Whoa! I am not religious, so this is interesting to read. You can do ANYTHING, and get a "get out of jail free card" so long as you blah, blah, blah? Nice! Sign me up!

It doesn't work that way, you have to ask Jesus to enter your heart, and then wait for him to enter.

Being entered by a strange man is what got her into this position in the first place.

That's what some people believe, based on Catholic teachings. But if you die before going to confession, you could go to hell for your sins.

“I have decided, notwithstanding anything to the contrary, to concede to all priests for the Jubilee Year the discretion to absolve of the sin of abortion those who have procured it and who, with contrite heart, seek forgiveness for it," writes Francis.

"May priests fulfill this great task by expressing words of genuine welcome combined with a reflection that explains the gravity of the sin committed, besides indicating a path of authentic conversion by which to obtain the true and generous forgiveness of the Father who renews all with his presence," he asks.

That's a lot of bitchy in one press release.

Catholic women who have abortions during the Jubilee year are truly blessed. It's a rare opportunity to be absolved of your sin without going to a bishop!

You can have had the abortion any time and still be absolved this year! It really is fantastic! I hope they're getting the message out on Twitter, etc.

Thanks a lot, Francis!!!

If you believe in hell, what *would* put you there?

You "accidentally" got pregnant? Wow, that's a first. You can't even own up to the fact that you played a role in it.

You could have chosen life and adopted your child out, rather than killing it.

I didn't say that I didn't have a role in it. I was using the pill and it failed. So, yes, it was an accident. I was so thankful that abortion is safe and legal and was upheld by the Supreme Court because I didn't want to give birth to an unwanted child and give it away. I don't believe that life begins at conception (like so many Americans) so I don't believe that a baby ever existed.

I am Pro-Choice which means I believe that women should be able to make this very personal, hugely important decision for themselves. If you don't think abortion is right for you, fine, but stop spewing your hateful messages and trying to impose your beliefs on others.

"What you believe" is nice, but irrelevant. What is important are the facts. And the facts are, that life begins at conception/ implantation, whether or not that is convenient for you in your situation. And "give birth to an unwanted child?" How ridiculously selfish is that? I assure you, many, many, many people would have wanted that child to have a life. And so did God.

NP here. As far as I'm aware, I conceived 10 "lives" from which only 2 implanted and made it to term. What kind of God comes up with that kind of inefficient reproduction system? And how could that God impart such value to every single embryo when he allows so many of them to die naturally? Half the souls up in heaven if you believe in such a place must be from embryos that never made it past a week or two.

What do Jews believe about all this?

We believe, generally (and I say generally because we can be a little all over the place and I'm sure someone will post something that contradicts this) that the life of mom trumps whatever or whoever is growing in your belly. We are needed HERE for our independently living and breathing family members. Some sects frown on abortion (though mom still trumps fetus). Mine does not.

I believe that we are in Hell now and we are freed when we die. If we are already in Hell then we no longer have to be afraid.

This is a whole lot of crazy. I had an abortion in 1997 and went to confession at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago and was absolved. The priest didn't tell me that I would need to bump it up to the next level of clergy to be officially forgiven and I certainly didn't know that.

I guess I've been living in mortal sin since 1997
