You keep saying that but have no support for it. Israel is a democracy. It has open elections. There are arabs, muslims and christians serving in government. It has freedom of the press, freedom of speech, freedom of religion. Women are free and equal, gays have rights and can serve in the military. It has freedom of commerce, investment in education, a free market. What are the "western values" it does not share? |

The prior poster (Iran is more of a democracy than Israel) is obviously just trying to stir up the pot. This is by far one of the most absurd statements I have ever heard. My 7 year old could easily explain how this statement is preposterous. |

But do the immigrants in your hyopthetical have a duly-recognized carved-out nation-state "in places like Bethesda and McLean"? I don't quite follow what you are saying. The hypothetical behavior you raise sounds like a law enforcement matter. That is correct about the US belonging to others, though. If people followed the logic of their positions (on either side) they would cede their property in Bethesda, McLean, or wherever to the rightful original owners and move back to wherever they are from. Somehow I don't think that will be happening any time soon, though. |

Yes, if only Palestinians in 1948 had a viable law enforcement power to stop Israeli land grabs! Israel has started to expand IMMEDIATELY from the borders of the nation-state carved out by the duly recognized powers. Look at the 1948 map and look at today's map. See how much was stolen. Also, the "duly recognized nation-state" covers never said Israel had to expel half a million Palestinians to make that nation-state happen. |

Though many Arabs/Palestinians lived there, they were never a sovereign nation. It was run by the British after the Ottoman empire and for better or for worse, the British could do with it what they wanted and decided to create Israel. The Jews certainly werent going to turn that down. The land was initially divided into 2 states: 23% jewish and 77% arab, but the arabs in 1948 did not want the Jews to have any state, so they attacked and (against all odds), the Jews won and drew their borders (as all countries do after winning a war started against them. While Arabs may have lived there before 1948, they were never sovereign over the land. |

Don't be ridiculous. Israel lords over the population of West Bank and Gaza without extending to them citizenship rights. Israeli Arabs are severely discriminated against, in public service, in employment opportunities, in municipal services in Arab-dominated neighborhoods, in marriage, in spending per pupil in Arabic schools, in property rights. Israeli Jews can reclaim properties they owned prior to 1948 and Israeli Arabs cannot. Israel privileges one group for immigration purposes vs. all others. Israel doesn't have freedom of speech - may you want to look up Gideon Levy? Israel has banned its reporters from visiting Gaza for the last 8 years. Torture and administrative detention for up to 6 months without trial is legal in Israel. |

The rules of modern warfare exclude the possibility of acquiring land by military conflict, just like they exclude attacking civilians (but that never applied to Israel, did it). Was Israel attacked by half a million Palestinians it expelled from the lands it wanted to have? Israel didn't just draw new borders, although that alone was bad enough. It also negated all property rights of those who lived in the lands they acquired by warfare. So first, you get thrown out of your house. And then the people who did it pass the law that says your house isn't yours anymore. Very civilized! Israel recognizes property claims pre-1948 from Jews but not from Arabs. Look up the absentee owner laws. |

Democracy like pre-Civil Rights U.S. maybe. Separate housing, separate security standards, illegal housing in the West Bank. As far as freedom of the press, it blocked an Israeli radio station from running an ad from a local human rights group B’Tselem, that named hundreds of the dead Palestinian children. Muslims and Jews can't intermarry. Schools are segregated by language the way our schools used to be segregated by race, and Arabic schools are significantly inferior, even though they are government run. You can't have equal rights in a religious state. You just can't. |

The one thing that has always troubled me is the tenets about Jewish destruction. This doesn't just include just the Jews in the Israeli/Palestinean conflict but my next door neighbor, my son's college roommate, my old college professor who gave me an appreciation of art, even the Jews who support ending the oppression in Gaza.
