Why do Marylanders think Virginia sucks?

I'm from MD and live in MD, and I have heard people in MD say racist things. Honestly, I don't see much difference between VA and MD.

In my experience as a Virginian and DC citizen I've found much more racism in VA than in MD.

I grew up in MD, and trust me, there's tons of racism. In fact, there was an article about schools in MD mostly being segregated. And while people will give a million BS reasons why that has nothing to do with race, it has EVERYTHING to do with race. It's why PG county is majority minority, but RIGHT next to it, AA county is majority white. There is a lot of division along racial lines.

You really didn't word that very well. PG County is an AA/Black majority county and Ann Arundel County is a White majority county.

PG is the most affluent Black Majority county in the country and one of the least affluent in the area.

I don't think VA sucks. It's a lovely state...to visit, at least for us. As an AA family we found more racial and ethnic diversity in MD cities when we were looking to move. Also wanted to live somewhere that seemed to reflect our personal political leanings.

I'm OP and it makes me laugh that people lump Northern Virginia in with "the South." I'm from the South. This is NOT the South. You're right, Northern Virginia is its own entity. Geographically it might lie in the South but there are no Southerners here.

Please don't turn it into a South bashing post. My point was, if the only "minus" against Virginia is you think it's "the South", it's not a very strong point. And y'all is already plural, it doesn't require an "s" and you punctuated it incorrectly.

True. My GPS system in my car is brand new and that mixing bowl dumps me in the wrong location all the time. The last time I tried to go to Tyson's, my DC ordered what we were looking on her phone after looking for a spot for over 45 minutes. She wanted to "look, feel and touch" shop. I was glad to get out of there. It is easier to find parking in Manhattan.

I find a parking space in under five minutes at all times but Xmas. WTF?

I will never, ever forget going to a party at the home of a dear friend who had just moved to Potomac. WONDERFUL people. They invited lots of neighbors. I have never, EVER been treated so poorly in my entire life. People actually turned their backs on me. We were looking to build, and were thinking about Potomac - after that party I told my husband no way in hell. We built in Great Falls, and have never been treated poorly by the community.

Used to think that (that VA sucked) when I moved here 28 yrs. ago. Now have lived in VA for 27 yrs. and realize that both MD and VA suck, but in different ways.

Pick your poison. We're sticking with VA but that doesn't mean MD sucks, it's just different.

For every lameass VA move politically (and there are plenty), there are the lower taxes (a plus) and the unending stream of corrupt Md. politicians including a stream of convicted or certifiably insane Governors to compare to (makes the political scene a wash more or less).

Oh, and p.s. my commute from Arlington to my job downtown in DC was far easier and shorter than if we had lived in MD. Figure at least an hour a day less, round trip, which comes to 1 hr. x ~200 days/yr. x 26 years = a shitload of commuting time saved. That's 216.667 entire 24-hour days that I didn't spend commuting ....

My impression of the MD DC suburbs was that most of the housing is in HOAs, and I do not want to live with neighbors watching my every move. In addition, I do not enjoy planned communities/walkability/communal living - I like my 2 acres in nature in VA.

The best of MoCo public schools have alway encouraged critical thinking skills, and the reading of great literature. Not so in Fairfax County~ I think due to the heavy concentration of military. But math instruction is much better in Fairfax.
