Automatically enrolled into Algebra 1 honors

I believe algebra 1 in grade 6 is to make the parents happy.
I don’t think most of the kids enjoy doing homework and math, instead of reading, sports or playing with friends or watching tv.

Very very few kids are really passionate about math and enjoy high school level math when they are 11-12 years old. If half of the AAP classes are taking it then it’s only because parents are forcing it on their kids.

This. My daughter came home and said no one in her class wants to do Algebra I next year but most of them are. Their parents are making them.

Why aren’t colleges going to care if a kid took algebra 1 in 6th grade and is doing DE by the time they are in 12th grade?
So, there’s no college admissions advantage to take it in grade 6?
May be MIT, and other stem engineering T20 colleges may care?

Why? Even selective schools like Harvard, UCSD etc are having to run remedial math classes. The kids are accelerating and not retaining.

Parents cannot force their kids into Alg 1 in 6th grade, FCPS automatically (thankfully) enrolls qualified advanced students. Very few parents like yourself can opt out if it's too much for your kid. We are happy with current process, never liked FCPS so much until now.

I’ve seen the email. It is not automatic enrollment in Algebra 1 in 6th AAP. There is a choice. Parents are informed and then decide.

Thirteen pages of posts railing against automatic enrollment, and then you had to point out it isn’t even automatic. What was the hurry, just when it was getting funnier.

DP. Actually, I pointed this out early on and this is the experience of people I know (not a large group though). AAP fifth graders not automatically enrolled in the 6th grade Algebra, but offered to opt in or opt out.

Then one poster came back and claimed that their fifth grader was automatically enrolled. Not sure whether everyone is seeing the same thing.

^ And just to clarify, I am talking about the current fifths graders who would be taking Algebra in the 26-27 school year. From what I’ve heard, no one was automatically opted in.

Selection process for the sixth grade for the 25-26 school year, on the other hand, was different. Qualifying AAP students were automatically opted in, with an option to opt out.

Kind of like bragging rights. Also, this Superintendent seems to make decisions without listening to her content experts within FCPS - who have stated that this is t a good idea.

This started as a discussion about 6th graders being auto-enrolled in A1H in 7th. Which they are.

Parents were never really short on bragging rights anyway, with reading levels, year-round travel team, music achievements, contest wins, and all that. just add alg1 to that list. who cares...

Superintendent is making decisions after listening to parents of advanced kids. We asked for it, and we got it. A few gen-ed loving parents that dont like it, can just Opt Out. Six hundred kids like the program, and that's what matters.

I’m an AAP parent who sees this as nothing more than a race to nowhere. What I’m trying to understand is why these advanced AAP 6th graders couldn’t make the cut under the old standards? Why did you have to petition to remove all prerequisites to get your kid access?

Why worry about other advanced kids who are thriving with Algebra 1? We asked for advanced math offering, and our kids got it and are happy with it.

You’re being given the option to opt out and stick with the standard AAP math track. Is anyone forcing you or your kid to do alg1?

I'm not the poster above....it's the tactics. No one likes to be forced to opt out of things.
