APS VA Snow Day Projection

Anonymous
I for one have joy in my household and will never be sending my children to school again. We will make snow if there is none and experience joy and rest. We love our kids though.

See you next time DCUM for the fun post-storm banter. The ups and downs (mostly downs really) and the inevitable same ending over and over.

When in doubt and even if you are sure we could open, school is probably closed.

I love my kids but I need to work and they are bored as all their friends are being sent to camps all day.

Agree with others that it isn’t going to happen. Let go of the hope and start planning other things. County facilities are opening today (libraries, rec centers, the pool at long bridge) and friends are probably available for playdates. Yes, it seems like we should be able to figure out a way to have school after 3 days off, but we won’t. Let go of “should” and accept what is.

Always been like this.

The County busts ass to get things cleared with 24-7 crews and APS maybe shows up at some point and sorts their shi* out. Zero urgency. County posted that school routes were 95 percent passable on instagram 21 hours ago. So yes I'm sure they are all passable today and with certainty tomorrow. And yes before people chime in, we know all owners did not clear sidewalks and there are piles of snow where the pumpkins usually stand to wait for the bus. That will all be the case on Monday morning too. Those are things we should be able to work with.

Why doesn’t the county help the schools more? There’s a weird separation there

separate entities, separate budgets, separate administration, etc

I'm sure they have agreed upon and formalized separation of who does what and county does their part fast and APS does their part slow. It costs an insane amount of money to clean up after these storms so no one is going to casually say oh i'll do that for you.

It is weird how the county just pretends like it has nothing to do with the schools even though they are obviously very interconnected.

Actually, its the inverse. Since the era of elected school boards, the schools champion their independence and will not deign to talk with or cooperate with the county.

The email reminder that tomorrow is a grade preparation day feels like salt on a wound...certainly not salt on APS sidewalks!

I can take my kids anywhere right now except school.

This is always how it is though. The entire world is back in action and APS is clearing off some final lots.

We know it's always been the way, but I can dream that APS will someone become more accountable and flexible.

But they are not independent. Would city status change all this nonsense?

It's hard when you go out and see everyone out and about and roads clear etc. No sidewalks aren't clear but they're not going to be. Not next week either. I think today is about as good as conditions are going to get for a bit.

This. It’s not good, but it’s as good as it will get. Temps will be freezing through next week.

I think they will cancel school all of next week also.

Anne Arundel fired up virtual school today. That feels like a long term plan.

Meanwhile FCCPS is open, right next door.

APS has only used 4 of their 13 built in snow days. No school next week if this ice hasn’t melted. Buckle up, parents!

Go away students.

They are opening the buildings up tomorrow for sports and teachers if they want go in.

Dream on they are closed all next week.

This is the kicker. They can open buildings for people who WANT to go in, but they can’t make attendance compulsory until these streets/sidewalks are in better condition.

Not a chance schools are open on Monday.

Attendance is never compulsory. Don’t attend on Monday.
