Oops, forgot to mention also invited to Honors College

SAT? ACT?

TO

well that is irritating because my kid is in state and had a 1560 SAT, 4.7 WGPA / 3.8 W and got spring admit which is fine except it means she could not be considered for the LEP she wants

Do a lot of "W" kids go to UMD or do they use it as a "safety?"

Maybe UMD are utilizing historical yield rates from the W svhools. Maybe it's a MoCo thing.

UMD does not yield protect. It is a very simple formula. If you are in the top 3% of your hs class, you're in. 4/5%, is spring admit. Outside top 5%, most likely a reject

This is incredible.

Two posts from reddit that may not support your theory, especially first one:

PP's kid had a higher GPA.

No. Not accurate. That doesn't take into account schools with a higher number of competitive kids.

+1 On a random visit to UMD not long ago (not an admissions tour), I thought the students were incredibly NICE. Didn't expected that vibe at a big state school, was very impressed by it.

We also had a super nice and informative tour guide. Somehow DD ended up on reg tour not admitted students, so guide took her on a private dorm tour after the official tour ended.

Parents reading for next year have hope! We were TO. Very good but not spectacular GPA. Mont county excellent and thoughtful EC’s but not the academic star stats we are seeing here. Hoping for spring admission got regular fall admission in a STEM field.

DC offered honors college, but not sure they are interested. If student turns down invite to honors college, are they still considered for merit aid/BK?

UMD is not really TEST OPTIONAL.

4.7 with 35 ACT or 1550 SAT in. And sometimes with Honors

4.75-4.8 with TO not in. Full rejections. So I wonder how they really count tests?

Just from my kids W school friends.

Schools that are TO should really tell weighting of test pre=application. Just in general for all schools.

Why turn down opportunity to be in the best dorms, be with a select cohort of students etc? My advice—do it for a year then drop it. Anyway B/K does seem connected to HC.

The UMD rep who visited DD's MCPS school made it extremely clear that TO really means TO, and that they aren't playing games around that, so I think the kids' hearsay in PP's is not correct.

Yes it is, but you need better GPA for TO. Over 4.8W. Also, ECs may factor. I just helped a TO student to admission + Honors College.

Yes, freshman connection is fine if you don’t want an LEP. Our frustration is that the LP he wants didn’t even get the chance to see his application since he only got freshman connection. If he didn’t want an LEP, we wouldn’t care at all that he only got freshman connection.

The problem with freshman connection is it means that LEP does not even get to see your application. He is a fantastic applicant for his LEP. It’s frustrating that they didn’t get the chance to review his application. Now we have to decide if he should take the chance of trying to be an internal transfer to his major instate or which is risky, or pay out of state to get his guaranteed major. As Maryland taxpayers, we’d like him to be able to do his major instate and the other Maryland schools don’t offer it (civil engineering).

That isn't accurate as per their admissions staff.

They said they put TO into one pile and apps with scores into another pile. TO was compared to TO and apps with scores were compared to others with scores.

They could have changed it, but that is what they said in the past 1-2 years.

My kid with TO got in.

Less than half of the class that started in 2024 submitted scores.
