The DCUM Book Club
| Interesting opinions on Tomorrows! I actually thought the first half was excellent - original and gripping. But towards the end I got bored. The ending was rather disappointing. It feels like Zevin got tired and gave up on her characters. |
Oh no, you guys. I have been poised half-way through Tomorrows for months. Really enjoyed the first quarter of the book or so, but then got extremely aggravated by the characters and general narrative arc. A friend just told me that she loved it and I was leaning towards picking it up again... but now DCUM has thrown me back into doubt! |
| Just finished Margo's Got Money Troubles by Rufi Thorpe. It was an easy read about a 19 year old who finds herself pregnant after having an affair with her English professor, and decides to keep the baby. It's not a heavy book (or a pro-life book or political book), just a girl making life work. I enjoyed it quite a bit, 4 stars. |
Haha well this is the OP of the first post on it and…I officially decided to DNF based on the replies here. I always feel guilty about not finishing. But there are just too many other great books out there! |
NP. Don’t feel bad. I didn’t like it either and only skimmed the last 1/3. I feel like you have to be really into video games in order to love this book, despite many people saying you don’t. There was no character development and as someone who is not a gamer, it got pretty tedious. Like, the first detailed description of the game they created was somewhat interesting (-ish), but the rest was just boring. |
Agree! This book was BAD. I was angry at myself for buying it in hardcover. |
| I just finished Help Wanted by Adelle Waldman. It took me a bit to get into it (it’s set in a big box store, and the manager and warehouse characters reminded me of Superstore characters at first), but then I got sucked in. Recommend! The author worked six months unloading boxes for a big box store and the details and humanity show through. I’m still chewing over how messed up our economic structure and jobs are for the people who work for giant retail chains. |

God of the Woods and All the Colors of the Dark have been favorites. I also really really liked Sandwich and the Wedding People. Long Island Compromise was solid as well.
I also read It's a Privilege to Be Here and it was both boring and angry. Husbands and Lovers was a lovely beach read as well. I've gotten pretty lucky with my summer reads. OH! And in honor of Francine Pascal's passing, I read the first 3 Sweet Valley High books. They are both wholesome and chaotic. |
| I liked the beginning of Tomorrow and Tomorrow etc as others have said, however after a certain point not much happened, the characters and story weren't compelling, and the whole thing felt like a Sally Rooney novel but with video games. |
Yes indeed. I actually had just read Normal People a month before Tomorrow etc. I felt like I had had my fill of stories about intense, long-lasting relationships with cycles of miscommunication/break ups/make ups. |
| I'm going to have to read this now, the Tomorrow book. My DH has it and loved it. He studied Medieval Literature at Oxford so the bar is high. |

Started The Wizard of Lies, by Diana Henriques. It’s about Bernie Madoff. So far, so good… I really enjoyed the Big Short, so I was looking for books in a similar vein.
DNF Family Lore, by Elizabeth Acevedo. It just wasn’t my cup of tea. Finished First Lie Wins. It was enjoyable beach read fluff. |
I enjoyed it, but felt kind of the same. I did like the meet cute with the sister and the one guy. But there were other storylines that didn't come to much of anything. |

Just finished listening to Good Company by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney.
It was about a woman who found out her husband had a year-long affair more than a decade earlier. I thought the book was a dud. Most of it was navel gazing while she contemplated whether to stay in the marriage or go. |
I read this one also and enjoyed the story despite my personal feelings about some of her choices. |
