It’s August, what are you reading?

It is about a woman who is recently divorced and goes on a wilderness group outing in Wyoming so she can learn to be an a$$ kicker instead of a pushover.
I thought it was pretty good.
Downloaded it from my library website.

That sounds fun

Anonymous wrote:Halfway through an ARC of “Absolution” by Jeff VanderMeer.

This is an extension of his famous trilogy (“Annihilation,” “Authority,” and “Acceptance”). Annihilation was one of the strangest, most creative works I had ever read, and I think it’s been hard to live up to that.

He is a fun follow on Twitter, too

The movie of Annihilation is one of the strangest movies I've ever seen, and some of its imagery has really stuck with me

I saw Annihilation in theatres and despite the amazing cast and visuals, disliked it because it was so different from the book. But then I watched it again, years later, and realized I liked it. The visuals are incredible. It was its own thing, kind of a riff off the book. It worked.

Sandwich. Hated it! Thought it would be a light fluffy August read from the point of view of a middle aged woman like myself with older kids and aging parents, but the characters were extremely unlikable.

Just finished James by Percival Everett. It was very good but I'm not sure quite as good as the hype.

I read it based on the rec here on DCUM. Loved the first 25% (enough to recommend it to my mom!), liked the next chunk - then couldn't wait for it to be done. My mom read it based on my rec and hated it from the start.

I just finished “None of this is true” and it was decent. Lacking in a bit of substance I guess, but a pretty quick read as is typical of the genre. The reviews largely pan it and I keep seeing, “I hated this because she made us feel sympathy for a p*do!!!1” Which, omg, If THAT’S what you got from this book I don’t even know what to say to you.

Now I’m switching to non-fiction and reading “Cue the Sun! The invention of reality TV” Which is surprisingly weightier than I expected, and ties reality shows to some of the early game shows and even pre-TV radio programs.

The Ministry of Time was a good summer read.

I just finished "Call Your Daughter Home" by Deb Spera.
The book is set in South Carolina in 1924. It is about a black woman who helps out two white families while the white families are in crisis.
I thought the book was very good, in a stomach churning way.
If anyone is interested in reading it, I feel like I should post many trigger warnings. There is domestic violence, child abuse, child sexual abuse, murder, disease, poverty, ghosts.
The book was recommended by Oprah. I downloaded it from my library website.

Just finished The Exhibitionist. Not good. I kept reading in hopes it would get better but it never did.

Dracula by Bram Stoker for book club. I love it.

Last month was The Historian about researching the myth of Dracula- sort of - it’s very very long and I only got 1/2 through it.

Maybe after reading Dracula I can finish it.

ITA. Boring and unlikeable. I slogged through this one and regretted it.

There's a decent adaptation on Netflix.
