It’s August, what are you reading?

I just finished The Measure and I can’t stop thinking about it. It was intriguing. Also about 50 pages too long. But the idea …

I thought the concept was interesting, but the book itself poorly written and too long. Inasmuch as a book can be designed for book club, I think this one is though. It lends itself perfectly to discussions of would you look at your string, why or why not, what would be the pros and cons.

Carrie Soto is Back, I’ve been enjoying Taylor Jenkins Reid’s books, except Daisy Jones and the Six, I found that one hard to finish.

I’m reading and not loving “Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow.” It’s getting close to DNF for me.

The premise was intriguing but after about 100 pages I was done. (Rare DNF for me.) I found the characters so dull and underwritten--sort of just widgets to be run through the overarching concept.

(Sort of) on the recommendation of DCUM, I read the Berry Pickers. I found it just okay. Enjoyed the first third or so of the book, and the dueling narratives of the family and Norma. I also liked that the central secret was never really treated as a “secret”... But the book just meandered along and I ended up feeling like “what was the point?” A sort of unfair criticism since what really is the “point” of any fiction, but still, I guess the dénouement was pretty underwhelming.

I just got an ARC of “Absolution,” which is a follow up to the Southern Reach trilogy (they made a movie out of the first one, “Annihilation.”)

I’m so excited to read it but feel as though I need to reread books 1-3 again first! So conflicted.

If you don't like it in he first half, you'll want to set it on fire in the 2nd half. I really enjoyed the part of it, but it went off the rails and I ended up hating it.

Thankfully, not everyone agrees! JK Rowling? Harry Potter?

Good for you! I listened to the first wimpy kid book a year or so ago and laughed and laughed. I'm 65.

That’s helpful to know. I’m already not loving it and don’t understand all the praise it got.

I also read and disliked Tomorrow (&etc). There was nothing to any of the characters and the plot was boring.

Started reading the Berry Pickers but only got a few pages in before taking it back to the library - it was clear the whole thing was just going to be depressing.

I am reading The Frozen River now, overall good if a little cheesy. I also read A Man Called Ove and was almost expecting to dislike it but ended up enjoying it quite a bit.

I just finished Ink Bood Sister Scribe and greatly enjoyed it. I’m not generally a fantasy fan, either.
