BCC student with weapon today

How are you so sure there wasn't a threat? Even now, we don't know for sure but we definitely didn't know that in the moment yesterday.
The letter made it seem like there was a lot unknown. What if there was another student with a gun? Yes that could be true any day but yesterday it seemed more likely there was another student at the school who could have been armed. Usually these guns come to school because of a conflict between two or more people.

I'm mad the kids weren't told what was going on. They could have helped keep an eye out.

Mooney is stuck. I'm not sure what his job is. It appears MCPS insists on handling all the communication and letting Mooney take the fall if it doesn't go well.

MCPS communication is horrific. Anyone who thinks they are going to get you urgent info is kidding themselves.

That's what SO many are asking. How did school and MCPD know there wasnt a larger threat inside or in surrounding areas. Did they just let an alleged gunperson "flee" out the building?? Did they catch the person?

And I don't know anyone in a position of responsibility at any organization who can simply issue a public statement without review by PR types and lawyers.

As a BCC parent, I'm more annoyed with the PTSA, whose president sneered that parents who are advocating for the return of SROs should "check your privilege."

Did you complete the MCPS survey to give feedback about remind app? The survey came out ironically after the BCC letter was posted to this thread.

I haven't but will. The idiotic PTSA messages all come into my inbox, even though most of them are ridiculous. (Really, you think that banning phones in schools will prevent weapons?? How delightfully quaint!) Meanwhile I have to hunt for official communications from the school or MCPS on an app I rarely utilize.

I'd rather the messages from parents with more time than sense go to an app, and have the messages from school leadership show up in my inbox.

And btw, for the white PTSA president to dismiss parental concerns about weapons in school as "privilege" is beyond cringe.

I agree that the PTSA president’s “check your privilege” comment was heavy-handed and unnecessary, but she’s done more than any of the parents complaining on the listserv to get answers and to keep our kids safe. I attended the January meeting with Dr. Mooney and several people from central office. I’m sure that was a heavy lift for the PTSA president. While attendance was good, the room should’ve been overflowing with concerned parents (it wasn’t). There was an update on safety at last week’s PTSA meeting (advertised on the listserv, so if you saw the privilege comment you must have seen the PTSA meeting agenda!). There were about 20 parents there and most were PTSA board members. At that meeting the PTSA president talked about the work of the newly-formed safety commitee (a call for volunteers went out on the listserv). People love to complain, but want other people to do all the work.

It is embarrassing that in the HS around here with student population well into the 2000-3000s, only a few dozen assist on PTSA. Only ~2% of families??

Do you really know the PTSA president?

That would come from MCPD….assuming they’re even looking for him…

People know better than to get involved with people who send out sociopathic and bullying messages attacking parents who are worried that their kids could be victims of a school shooting.

That’s why.

Sherrif SUV spotted driving around twice yesterday near EW Hwy. Don't know for what reason.

Every HS PTSA in MoCo has people such as the ones you describe at your HS? Doubt it.

Many rumors floating. School has not effectively answered FAQs.

It looks like Mooney and MCPS learned nothing from the January meeting on safety and security that they had with the community.

There are zero consequences in today's MCPS environment. Starting at Silver Creek (if not earlier), students who receive detention simply don't show up. There are no consequences to being a no-show. Inmates run the asylum, so what do you expect in high schools when kids are raised to think they can do whatever they want.
