Look at all the media attention around the WNBA and the hazing of Caitlin Clark. Things that would get a pass in men’s sports is seen as “mean” when females do it.

The WNBA.

- there are only 144 players. The WNBA is tiny!

Yet those 144 manage to haze, bully, break laws, and even grab international news headlines for really stupid drug violations.

Not to mention: there is a mean-spirited core of lesbian athletes who get away with hating on league players who are not LGTBQIA+. The WNBA is seriously way out of control.

True.

Now under the microscope they will expand their purview or sink back into their little corner

That's not true anymore, so now you can definitely get a crew of them taking over one of the sports teams. I think the only place free of them is the really rough sports, that tend to still attract a certain kind of non-girly girl, like rugby, or the excruciatingly difficult sports, like track and cross country, because no one has enough energy left to be mean.

And it's such a damn shame. Was a volleyball player a gazillion years ago.

Definitely a mean girl sport today. But the injuries are catastrophic. ACL/MCL meniscus ankles.

Worst injuries I've ever seen are volleyball.

Based on the comments it appears that there are mean girls everywhere.

A lot of times they are usually mean to each other. My daughter did one year of football varsity cheerleading as a freshman and they got mean when it came to boys. Professional track ballet students can be mean to each other when it comes to getting a student part in the NYC Ballet. Try being a freshman who gets the lead role in the musical.

I don’t think they travel in a group being mean to people not bothering anyone. It’s usually meanness based on insecurity of their own abilities.

Yes, they are everywhere, but they are more in some places than others. There are more mean girls in activities that are not as challenging. Once you notice what they are more drawn to and what they are less drawn to, it's easier to avoid them.

I used to play volleyball with Omarosa and I can confidently say she was a mean girl.

I ran cross country and track. In middle school I vaguely remember there being mean girls but I think they switched to a different sport or stopped playing sports. Those girls were also popular. The rest of us were serious about school and for the most part nice. It’s also coed which has it perks. Getting a bunch of girls together always crates drama, unfortunately. I think the boys balanced it out a little. Lacrosse has always been the mean boy sport. We were all very fit. I don’t recall anyone being overweight. I am definitely pushing my boys to tan track when they are older. My 8 year old will begin next spring. It’s definitely more independent and I think that has a lot of benefits. Growing up I could do stuff alone. I didn’t need a group of girls with me all the time in high school or college like a lot of my friends.

Nothing to do with sports being challenging
