I lived in 9 countries by the time I turned 18. You want me to name them all? It’s just as annoying as you might imagine. |
But you are only *from* one. Name THAT one. (Sarcasm, ofc 😜) |
You are not under oath. People are just trying to get to know you. You could easily say "I grew up all over the place because of my mom's job but we've been here for 5 years." Easy. Where one is born and raised has a big impact on who you are, your values, your interests and experiences. |
Not born, and only the formative years apply. That's the rules. |
Conversation pro tip: don’t ask good questions to get to know someone’s values, interests, and experiences. Find out where they were born and make all those assumptions yourself based on stereotypes. |
Its a multi step process. Do any of you have any actual interactions with humans? |
Yes. I get to know the person and not my stereotype of them. |
Whose rules? People have been arguing against that common sense position. For me the rules are to maintain nice social interactions in pleasant ways. Who cares how people define where they are from? That is up to them. |
| Based on this thread I'm going to start telling people my family was in the witness protection program when I was growing up so I'm not at liberty to say. |
| I have never encountered anyone who lied about where they are from. Where on earth do you live? |
OP's criteria is sufficiently vague that everyone is a liar unless you provide GPS coordinates. |
|
Asking where people are "from" is in order to put them in a box.
You're from London? Oh ok so you're probably highly educated and wealthy if you found your way here (DC). You're from Nebraska? Oh you're a hick who is not worth my time....unless you're one of those outliers who attended Princeton. Etc etc etc ad nauseam. |
Yeah and you do that by asking questions about their life and their experiences and opinions. One of those questions is "So, where are you from?". |
| ^ are you under the impression that people are walking around just asking people where they are from and then staying or walking away based on the answer? |
Me too! Born in Brooklyn, went to PS 179 and my parents moved us to Rockland (half hour outside the city) when we were 11 & 13 because there was a big fight at our middle school basketball game and some rival school kids brought switchblades... that was it, they'd had it... but I'm not from the city either then I guess, lol. |
