Most overrated international destination?

Kyoto

Copenhagen

I suppose no one really glamorizes cities in India, but Delhi is a special kind of awful. Mumbai and Kolkata are interesting and have their charms, but Delhi... gah

South Africa. Absolutely beautiful country. But you can't move once the sun goes down. Even in Cape Town.

The American South Pacific. All of it. From Guam to FSM to the Marshalls. Walmart on an island. Depressing.

Tahiti. French Walmart on an island. Trashy place.

Papeete (Tahiti’s main island) was downright scary for me traveling alone as a young woman. Moorea was nice though.

Zanzibar takes the cake for me. Horrible place.

Istanbul. Very crowded and noisy.

The only international destination I have disliked is Cancun. I have found a way to enjoy all other destinations. I’m surprised to see Barcelona mentioned. And Costa Rica, although I do prefer Panama and Belize to CR.

Can you elaborate on Kyoto?

The same propaganda people who come here and try to get us to foam at the mouth about trans kids, Central American gangs and holistic admissions steep Dutch people in propaganda about how we Americans are all shooting each other and letting all of the poor people die in the street without medical care, and about how people from other countries are generally moochers.

There’s certainly an element of truth in the stuff about America, but it’s being hyped up, distorted and used by people who mainly just want Putin to get Ukraine.

This time the city seems much dirtier. Trash everywhere. The train station was horrid.

Can't see us going back anytime soon.

Sad to see.

In Amsterdam now... totally agree. It's disappointing.

Try taking the train to Katwijk, where the beach is. Or take the train, the ferry and cabs (or rent bikes) to go up north to the beach at Texel.

We’re the oldest and greatest country on the earth, we have the highest standard of living, and we’ve never lost a war, we can judge whoever we want!

Oldest country on earth????

What school did you go to? We are one of the youngest.

I was educated here in America, home to the world’s best education and healthcare system.

You are pathetically ignorant, I am afraid.

Our health care system is #1 for cost alone. We trail behind most high income counties for outcomes/health indicators.

Try reading instead of waving your flag maybe.

You need to show some more pride in your country. The rest of the world combined has zero Super Bowl trophies, how do you explain that?

And the World Series! America is also number one in baseball!

What? Dutch people weren’t friendly without knowing where I come from. Everything closed early, the weather was crappy, and people appeared to be uptight. Not my vibe, won’t come back.
I adored Spain and its people, though, guess they did not get the propaganda memo yet.

Disagree on Kyoto. But I will note that much of the city is modern and ugly. Although the U.S. intentionally spared it from the bomb to preserve its beauty (largely because one senior official honeymooned there), the Japanese tore down a ton of historic areas and redeveloped them in the post-WW2 period. It’s a real shame, especially given how many other cities were obliterated.

I loved the sand and water there. The sand was like powder and the water was calm and a gorgeous color.

Turks deserves all the praise - it’s color and water is among the best in the world.

- having travelled all
over the world.

Agree.

Because it's not really an authentic place anymore. The temples and the old town are lovely architecturally, but what you tend to see are Japanese women cosplaying in their kimonos. Lots of couples doing their pictures. It's extremely touristy. It's a very manured place. Like a Japanese Disneyland. You go for the pictures and a few hours in pretend-land. The rest of Kyoto is pretty drab. You're going to have a more "real" experience in Osaka or Tokyo. The bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto is very cool though.
