Charlotte is nice in many ways but the schools are not "great."

And I find it very hard to believe that’s higher ranked than the mainline ones i.e. Treddyfrin-Easttown & Lower Merion. But, the name of that magazine gives it away!

Before going further, can we clarify with OP what they consider "great schools?"

A great many of these aren't anywhere near what we would consider a great school by DMV(or any other major city) standards.

I'd look into the Dayton, OH area. Centerville has great schools and good sports. Lots of cute neighborhoods and parks. It's also an hour away from Columbus and Cincinnati. Maybe Grand Rapids, MI? Winters are rough there though. I would look more at midsize cities. Any good school district in a larger city is going to be rough with your budget.

You can find a 2-bedroom condo in Reston for less than $300k. The schools are decent and there are lots of community pools and tennis courts.
