Why are Northern Kids Flocking to Southern Universities?

Actually, I wouldn't doubt that they have. If someone got into both, they're likely getting a free ride at Alabama, versus potentially 80,000 a year for Harvard, or whatever it is now. Cost matters to some people more than "prestige."

This. Friend of DS got into Princeton last year, but passed it up for the full ride to Alabama

This makes sense for especially for real majors like CS Engineering etc.
You can still say I got into Harvard

Simple supply and demand. And all those northern libs? They will be registering to vote. There will be a shift over time. You just can’t fight progress.

Even my nieces and nephews who were raised in Alabama and went to a big southern school voted for Biden, are fully vaxxed and date outside their race. Progress is happening with or without northerners. So many misinformed generalizations about the South here.

This.

Alabama had a Rhodes Scholar last year (from NJ IIRC). Fairly confident he got scholarships and merit aid to other schools more prestigious in the eyes of Dcumlandia.

Kid likely graduated debt free and is currently one of a select few Rhodes Scholars.

+1

People living in a NE bubble simply don’t have firsthand experience. They form opinions based on stereotypes and foolishly apply them to everyone across the state/the south.

I see Alabama has hired a new PR firm! The incessant "roll tide" poster has disappeared and a new booster has taken her place.

As a white collar professional in dc, I wonder if grads from the south might be more appealing to employers up here in the NE who have grown exhausted by the current crop of employees who make everything an issue. I’m completely serious.

MY 32 ACT kid was rejected from Auburn this fall. It is crazy out there.

If you have a 4.0 they throw in more more and cover some room and board. Compare that to Penn State or Mich OOS. Plus kids with these good but not stellar stats have no problem being admitted at Bama.

Michigan is miles ahead of Alabama academically. There is no comparison. [/quote
I don't know about "miles ahead" academically. It is, however, way more expensive if you get the merit money described above. And a lot colder.

If one didn’t know that Michigan is far academically superior to Alabama, then Alabama makes perfectly good sense to attend. .

That was fun, now compare Bama to northern state schools like SUNY, Rutgers, UConn, UMASS…. Plenty of reasons to turn down those schools for Alabama

This whole premise is stupid unless you have the numbers of how many kids from the south go to northern universities. And how many east coast kids go to the west coast? And how many west coast kids come east?

Many college kids just want a change of scene.

The south has warmer weather which appeals to some.

I'm guessing the rest of this thread is full of BS answers. I saw one about more "polite society". Yea right. Get over yourselves down there. Stop with all the stereotypes.

i'm glad you noted you were being serious because the rest of your post suggests you were trolling the board with a stupid comment.

Absolutely! Mediocre state schools are pretty much interchangeable, right?

You don't speak for Asians.
Duke, Emory, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, Rice are plenty popular.

This is ridiculous. Have you been to Texas? 20% of UT student body is Asian with same at Univ of Houston. 40% at Rice and nearly 10% at the remaining TX schools. And all Texas schools have greater Hispanic populations than the entirety of the NE. As a Hispanic myself, I'd much rather be in school in Texas than anywhere on the E coast. Y'all just need to get out more.

Was responding to prior PP saying that only white kids go south BTW - not immediate PP.
