Constant teacher absences

Anonymous wrote:The PP that pointed that the principal is a politician is actually quite correct. FCPS chooses principals who can manage parents and teachers. This usually results in someone who says one thing, but does another. Teachers fully realize this, but it usually takes parents many years.

OP, I would 1) send a follow-up email summarizing what you discussed so that there is a written record and 2) don’t just trust that the principal will actually do anything, you need to stay on it. Written record is very important!

Just because they “hear” your concerns doesn’t mean anything will change in the next few weeks.

The teacher herself reached out to me obviously because the principal spoke to her. At least they will know that parents are taking notice about the lack of consistency in the classroom. The principal did say they have assigned a sub now especially for my child’s classroom and I guess that is the best that we can ask for given the circumstances. .

Well, you sure rolled over pretty fast OP. Laughing at how you think your tantrum actually made a difference.

This teacher and my concerns regarding her have nothing to do with you or your life. I am glad the principal and even this teacher at my child’s school are handling it much more maturely than all of you. They could have chosen to ignore my email or be extremely defensive but they chose to reach out to a parent who had some concerns. Are you lot upset that my frustration was heard? I wrote one updated post and the brigade keeps pouncing back lol.

Based on the extremely disrespectful posts here by some teachers (yes all these rude posters are disgruntled teachers) they really seem to be scraping the bottom of the barrel to hire you. Name calling, personal attacks, accusing me of the current teacher shortage LOL.

WE WERE LAUGHING AT YOU! You posted on a public forum accusing the teacher of using the unions to protect her and that you wanted consequences. Now your trying to go back and act like you were innocent.

Only posters who agree with OP are welcome to post here. If you don’t agree, you are “rude” and a “disgruntled teacher.”

OP, you forgot to put this disclaimer in your original post.

No there have been respectful posters (even teachers) who disagreed but understood where I was coming from and gave me helpful suggestions. But then there are some who come in calling me names such as idiot, crazy, entitled and then one actually thinks the teacher is going to seek employment elsewhere because of one concern I had. Seriously? And I’m the entitled one? FYI, I have not once reached out to the principal or teacher and I have been an FCPS parent for the past 6 years. There are other complaints that my child and my child’s friends have had where they say the teacher often raises her voice for no reason, doesn’t give them enough time to compete their worksheets and doesn’t explain things well. But let’s please continue to sympathize with the teacher because apparently as an FCPS parent I cannot dare bring anything up.

OMG, you just added 3 more complaints to this! 1) The teacher is raising her voice because the class is talking over her. 2) Teacher can’t wait for 100% of the class to finish a worksheet or we would never move on or nothing will ever get accomplished. 3) She could be explaining this just fine but your kid doesn’t understand. Now all your issues are addressed.

Yup, OP posted asking for advice and the teachers pounced like they do at every comment asking for advice with how to deal with a situation that is related to teachers. The FCPS forum has seriously devolved over the past few years. Between disgruntled teachers taking everything so personally and Republican trolls, there's very rarely anything helpful posted here anymore.

OP here and I agree. Gosh these disgruntled teachers come to you like hungry wolves! I’m just glad they aren’t teaching my kids and that my child’s school has sensible mature educators who take concerns raised by parents seriously. I wish all you disgruntled posters peace of mind and I hope you all stop being so bitter and jaded.

I think you're over the top and I'm just a lowly parent.

We had a teacher no show at least half the school year. It was a lost year of education. Our child learned nothing, and we have testing to prove it. It's no joke to lose 1 year of elementary school.

You mean like how entitled parents attack teachers to get what they want for their child? LOL!
We teacher will be less bitter and jaded when we don't have to deal with a holes like you.

DP. Are you saying that teacher attendance has no impact on effectiveness?

Anonymous wrote:OP here. So the principal did call me and was very understanding about my concerns. She assured me that the teaching team meets every week to plan their agenda and every class is on track. She also talked about the lack of quality subs and how they are severely understaffed now. She wanted to facilitate a meeting between me and the teacher but I said that won’t be necessary. Today the teacher did reach out to me herself to schedule a conference if I have any more concerns. I guess the principal spoke to her. All in all, I’m glad I spoke to the principal and looking forward to talking to the teacher as well. I’m also glad my concerns were heard and nobody deflected or minimized my concerns as so many did here.

That is, nobody deflected or minimized your concerns to your face.

Op any woman who has ever gone back to work soon after having a baby should be on you. Your lack of empathy is appalling. I truly hope your speciality is not HR in whatever important work you do!

Exactly! I'm one of the "angry teachers" who replied to OP, yet I'm just a working mom and parent, not a teacher. There are a lot of things to write to the principal about, but this is not one of them. Yes, her son drew the short end of the stick with a teacher who has been absent after coming back from maternity leave (but given all of the snow days and holidays in Jan, this really only equates to maybe 2-3 weeks?), but she clearly did not have to worry or has forgotten about how stressful being a working mom with a newborn was. Or maybe she had some sort of magical unicorn setup with a night nurse. I had a somewhat flexible office job at the time and remember how guilty I felt about not doing my job at the same level I was pre-baby. It was incredibly hard the first 5 or 6 months back. As OP pointed out, teaching is an incredibly important job as they are responsible for the education of 25-30 students. That doesn't mean that this teacher can magically fix a nationwide problem because she wants to. OP needs to get a grip and a reality check. I would have felt terrible if I had a boss e-mail me about missing days when I was already struggling mentally with not being at peak performance.

It's only elementary school, chill out. Your kid will be fine.
