I know!! Couldn't she just drop the kid and keep teaching? And then she might have appointments. Why is she allowed to do that? I mean, is there a union or something?

Do you not know how to read? She was on mat leave for 4 months and just got back in Jan and ever since she has been back she is constantly absent at least two days every week. She was actually absent for one entire week in late Jan. She is allowed to do whatever she needs for her child and my child is also allowed to get a proper education form a teacher who takes her job responsibilities seriously.

You're so right OP. Teachers with serious health problems or who have babies with health problems should be fired if they have to miss work too much. I'm sure there is no law against that. Darn these unions!

At some point they should take a leave of absence if they cannot do their job. And, I say this as someone who quit their job due to health issues. We have had two teachers out extended periods of time and it was really bad with multiple subs. Luckily it was in elementary school where we could supplement.

Got news for you - they can take a leave of absence and there will still be subs in the classroom. Principals cannot hire full time for positions where the teacher has not formally resigned. There are actually rules against it. I think they are from the state, not the county, and related to ADA, although I never understood it exactly.

Yeah, okay.

I'm not the OP. If that is the case, then all the more reason that school administration should have had a plan in place for a regular substitute and additional support for the class to avoid disadvantaging the students while the teacher goes through this difficult time.

Are you profoundly dim? They couldn't just magically "have a plan." THERE IS A CRITICAL TEACHER SHORTAGE.

One more time for the people in the back....or those not listening!

If there are no subs, then I guess the principal is lying about using a regular substitute for this class. There may be a shortage of substitutes, but there are not zero substitutes in the district.

DP. I'm not saying the principal is lying, but I doubt they've got a dedicated regular substitute for a teacher who is not officially on leave in a year like this. The more likely scenario is that the principal has communicated internally that they're not going to split the students between other classes in the grade level or pull whatever coverage they can find from that class if they can help it.

Oh being worried about my child’s lack of education makes me a terrible woman? You don’t know how appreciative I always am of teachers but I also expect them to take their job seriously and teach my child. I understand it’s a hard time with an infant and maybe she should have taken an entire year off and given someone else this job while she takes care of her kids and gets into a routine.

OP, you are allowed to be concerned about your kid, but your complete lack of compassion for this teacher is disturbing. You come across as a selfish jerk. And obtuse. Do you not realize all the issues related to the pandemic right now. Teacher and sub shortages? Are you really this DENSE and selfish.

Honestly OP. STFU.

Maybe take some deep breaths. It’s only February. Your kid’s in AAP, right? They’ll be fine. It’s only elementary school. Relax.

This teacher and my concerns regarding her have nothing to do with you or your life. I am glad the principal and even this teacher at my child’s school are handling it much more maturely than all of you. They could have chosen to ignore my email or be extremely defensive but they chose to reach out to a parent who had some concerns. Are you lot upset that my frustration was heard? I wrote one updated post and the brigade keeps pouncing back lol.

Based on the extremely disrespectful posts here by some teachers (yes all these rude posters are disgruntled teachers) they really seem to be scraping the bottom of the barrel to hire you. Name calling, personal attacks, accusing me of the current teacher shortage LOL. [/quote

Every time you double down on this ridiculous lie, you show yourself to be even more of a fool. Just FYI.

That's why other countries provide a year of maternity leave. We, as a country, have decided not to do this.

report it to the governor accountability line?

Op, don’t listen to the people making excuses for the teacher or principal. The kids deserve an education and no school isn’t childcare that you just substitute afterschool or a tutor. I am so sick and tired of tax paying citizens accepting so little from their public schools.

I think you should demand a meeting with the principal. If she doesn’t find a permanent sub then escalate up the food chain.

Yeah, let's start reporting teachers who take sick leave. Especially the ones with newborns. How dare they. The government must investigate why your child has a substitute teacher.

You should run the school since you have such a good handle on how things work and would be able to get permanent subs for when a teacher is out with Covid or a medical appointment. Sounds like you have a workaround to the global pandemic and teacher shortage.

Excellent point here. I am a teacher, and the partial maternity leave is a huge problem in ES. Teachers leave two weeks into the school year and sometimes there are subs for the rest of the year.

You hardly pay any tax at all to the schools. Perhaps if we paid more, we'd get something better. We actually pay much less than other "good" school districts.

What exactly do you think will happen here? How do you think this will play out.

There. are. no. qualified. subs.

Not sure what you want. The only thing escalating up the food chain should be demanding better pay to entice more subs.
