Will MCPS go virtual the first part of January?

“Hoping”?? Dear God I hope you are making shit up.

5 percent positivity is higher than in the community right now. As in school rates are typically lower than the community it’s unlikely that this will happen at any more than two or three schools.

We wouldn't know real school rates as its opt in testing/not mandatory testing and not everyone.

Then how does PP know it’s higher than in community? Where is your community rate coming from? Looking at the MD dashboard and let’s hope PP is right.

This huge piece all this discussion is continually missing is that all of the families who have not tested (because why if they no indication/direction)…all of the silent unknown cases that would come strolling into school come Jan 3rd. My daughter has it now and we just tested just because — not because of symptoms. I do not have it — neither does anyone else in the family but I wouldn’t be surprised if we DO test positive later this week. If they don’t delay school opening in person then cases will only rise and kids will spread even more.

We’re you living under a rock for the more than a year schools were virtual and the disaster that was? The hysteria has got to stop. We have done enough harm to children for no good reason.

Amen!!

How were your kids harmed?

Spending an hour+ each day listening to the teacher beg the class to click the right link.

That is your rational for being harmed. If you were listening, why not step in and offer to provide support to your kid and others?

My kids have gotten great computer skills because of virtual. Their typing skills are impressive. Sounds like a parenting issue.

Provide support for others? WTF are you talking about? Do you really think anybody takes you seriously here?

Provide support to your kids while in virtual or doing homework. Its called parenting. You should try it. You really don't expect a young child to be on a computer without help, do you? Maybe that's why your kids struggled so much. You!

You really have reading comprehension issues. I'm not sure if you're a troll or just aren't very bright. Likely both, though.

I'm clearly bright enough to figure out how to make my kids successful in virtual. Too bad you aren't willing to put in the effort into your kids as we do. Maybe they, and you would be more successful and you would be a kinder person.

Really, you have yet to say what the real harm in it all has been.[/quote

Np here but I'll jump in. I was teaching (virtually) while my own kids were virtual. It was terrible. I couldn't leave my students hanging while I tried to keep my 7-year old focused throughout the day. Would you be ok with that day after day if I was your kid's teacher? I doubt it. Its really tiresome to keep hearing you and others accusing parents of being neglectful when the real problem was a developmentally inappropriate learning modality we had no choice but to use for young kids. For months and months. Of course kids suffered as a result. Get out of your bubble.

So, how long do you propose to go virtual? Do you honestly think two weeks will be sufficient? Because frankly, if MCPS pulls the trigger on closure, my guess is we’re looking at two MONTHS, minimum. And f that noise.

DP, does anybody here doubt that MCPS makes decisions based on what is less likely to make people yell at them? They are weak. Doing the right thing often means getting yelled at and when that happens in my job I celebrate it.

Unfortunately if they close they won’t open till Spring again. I don’t understand, if your kid has covid keep him home and open the schools for the ones who are not sick. At this point if everyone gets tested before returning to school then it would be possible to not only open the schools safely but also to keep them open. Get your kids vaccinated. The surge will pass quickly.

My kids ARE vaccinated.

So again: f that noise.

DP. I agree that the surge will pass quickly. But a point in time PCR test for every student does nothing but overwhelm the testing sites. Something like that needs to be planned. Too bad central staff are on vacay.

In the positive side, two months virtual will certainly end a number of careers in MCPS, the BOE and county council.

I think they’ll be in person on the 3rd. If they were going to go virtual, wouldn’t there have told us by now?

Unfortunately we need that case count for MCPS to take action.

There is going to be a huge surge between the parties, dining out and travel.

They are clear they are staying in person except if a particular school has an outbreak. They will allow all kids to return as the only way to know right now is if enough parents test via the county who then reports it to the school.
