Why do some folks send Xmas cards so late?

Anonymous
My friends sent me cards as their wives are good wives. Sad they were a decent part of 15. Next year I am going to cut list again and give reason why if asked. I have a sick kid and will miss Xmas this year as canceled plans today.

We took down the cards yesterday except a few. Looked depressing. Some cards folks looked homeless. Dress up for God sake. Or at at least shower and comb your hair!! Some looked like folks snapped the shot while cleaning out garage

Oh my.

I was running errands last night and dropped off mail (non Xmas related at 430pm) at Post office. I saw a line of folks mailing Xmas gifts. Really in 12-22? Few folks dropping off cards. I finish errands drive by post office on way home see a whole pack of mini vans and subs dropping off cards at 515 pm. Literally after last pick up!

Why bother.

I am not on social media at all. I rarely text. Just immediate family and siblings. So I have zero social media presence.

I do have what’s app for European cousins on my side. If they are a to text merry Xmas that is cool.

I guess class has died. I had a niece who got engaged and did not send out thank you notes or even texts or call to say got present. Her mom called her out and she responded when I cash their checks they know I got them so good enough! Wow. Did not get Xmas card from them either. Although did not send one as they made it clear.

My two old grand aunts in their 90s literally in nursing homes on dead beds told us cards bring them a little joy at Xmas since they are so sick and old. So of course that is too much work for today’s 40 year old to pause Netflix one minute to bring a dying women some joy.

Um...I think you are on Linkedin.

I ask as a few folks year after year mail it so late.

I also go to NY to see family most years and some cousins will be at Xmas with us and when I get back home to the DMV the card is there. Why mail it so late that you see me in person at Xmas before I get the card? I get folks are busy we all been there. But I had one person mail literally a card that is a Christmas card I get it after Xmas every year the last 30 years!! I usually have taken down cards by then so awkward.

One year my wife and I had a lot of things going on Illness, death of my mother and paired down list and did not mail the late people as we assumed only sending us a card since we sent one to them. Guess what they still came. Usually day after Xmas.

Why do they do it? Two are now literally empty nesters and retired. So they have time.

It's definitely a passive aggressive thing. I send out cards in batches: the folks I like best get theirs by Dec. 14, second tier by Dec. 25 and, well, the rest maybe by New Year's. Maybe folks just don't like you very much?

Maybe to annoy you.

The ones I send late are the people I want to cut off my list. But every year I feel obligated to send them one after I get theirs.

Maybe that's what is happening

OP, I hope you included in your cards this year a warning that any not received by Dec 20 will be declined and thrown away.

I have this pet peeve with birthday cards too. 90% of cards for me or my kids arrive after their birthday! Whereas I put up a birthday banner for the week before their birthday (I have little kids) and would like to leave the cards displayed on our island that week.

I truly wonder how people like you and OP manage to get through your days.

Well, when someone displays cards on an island rather than a fireplace mantel where they should be properly displayed, that's all we need to know about them.

I put my cards up on mantle and have a display for them. So when I host Xmas people always while I serve appetizers and drinks look at them and often comment. Oh I see your sister in law has a new daughter.

So if not there no one know it was sent and after Xmas when cleaning up house last thing I need are cards after the fact.

Look I get invited to Xmas my MIL house around 20 people in room send me Xmas card and I sent them none. Weird. Even if I send them late weird. And then they will tell you with WFH so much more free time to hit gym, go out to dinner, tell you about all the nextflix binge but you are so low your card is send day after Xmas. Don’t bother so I can take you off the list. Or just give it to me in person Xmas day when I see you.

Something tells me you also closely track how many linkedin, FB and insta followers you have. True or false OP?

More importantly, OP wants everyone ELSE to track how many followers OP has

Never occurred to me that displaying cards was for the purpose of bragging to guests how important I am.

Because they are clearly inferior to you. We bow before your greatness

Ps Christmas lasts 12 days.

Right? My mind is boggled. It’s a nice gesture. Who cares when they arrive? People need to get over themselves.

People are crazy. We haven’t even taken a picture yet much less sent out cards. Children are just back from college so maybe we will do a happy New Years card.

I did my college kids Xmas picture at thanksgiving. Even if I did not they got home last Friday so could have done it then and had in mail on Sunday.

My 82 year old relative with an 86 year old sick husband who moved homes this summer was my first card received Thanksgiving weekend.

I get irritated by Christmas cards sent in November.

You are a Grinch if you don’t celebrate the entire Christmas season from Dec 24-Jan 6. People like you have ruined the season by playing Chrismas music in November and tossing your tree out before the season is halfway over.

I can't believe people question timing, much less get miffed by timing.

This is the weirdest thread.

Agree with all of the above. A nice gesture is definitely lost on some people. I added a happy New Years on our cards because I didn’t know when people would actually get them this year.

+1. I really had no idea anyone put thought into this. When I get a card I read it, sometimes hang it up on the fridge, sometimes throw it away but I’ve never thought to attach deep meaning to when I receive it.

Op, are you the person who shops for Christmas in summer and puts up a tree in Fall? Than I totally get you

Pretty sad. It is not the mail as I mailed two bills last week and both checks cashed.

I be ok if I got no more cards late people. I trim list more and still keep my elderly relatives who enjoy cards but too old to really send out cards.

I was thinking maybe next Nov 2nd we all ring the late folks doorbells and yell trick or treat. Why not? They are cool with doing things late.

+1

Honestly it’s disrespectful
