Mormonism and women

Anonymous
My friend (raised Mormon, no longer practicing) linked on FB to this blog post about gender discrimation in the Mormon religion, specificnally in their temples. I was fascinated! I know quite a few Mormon women and they are all smart, accompliShed interesting committed moms. I have learned a lot by watching how they approach being moms and have always admired how the religion values parenting. After reading about the gender bias in the temples, I'm a little shocked. Maybe modern Mormonism is just a social club that helps teach good habits and the more traditional aspects of the religion are ignored in daily life?

What can you expect from a religion with a leader who had a revelation in the 20th Century from God that it was okay for blacks to join? Something wrong with the channels of communication? Maybe they will get another message about women.

I went to school with many Mormons. I would go with my friends to their Ward on Sundays when I spent the night. I found the church to be horribly sexist. The teen women classes I attended taught them how to be a good wife, etc.

They also believe black people are descendants of Cain, which is unacceptabe.

All religions were originally very sexist. I would hope there are more progressive Mormon churches around these days.

Interesting article. I have a friend who is a Mormon and know a little about it. We met at work before I had kids (she has since moved back to Utah). She is a wonderful person and very open-minded, well educated, etc. She seemed fine when we would get together and some of us would drink (though she didn't drink obviously). I wasn't able to get over certain aspects of Mormonism that I learned about (and not saying I should - I don't practice so no need for me to embrace everything, and I try really hard not to judge others). But I thought it was very strange that she did not allow herself to masterbate. She said when she got an urge or a thought like that she would go work out or pray. I really think ignoring that physical need and not exploring your body...it's just something I can't relate to.

She is married now but didn't get married until her mid 30s (she is still working but they plan for kids and she would like to stay home if they have any). I read an article that marriage was a huge goal for Mormon women, and those that didn't get married typically felt inadequate, etc. Which I totally thought was awful - but again, it's not my religion or culture so it's not for me to have to embrace.

Hello, The Man. It's so nice of you to take time out of your busy day of oppression, discrimination, misogyny, and world domination through ignorance and misinformation to stop by our little forum.

- hijab
- no female priests (Catholicism)
- "unclean" women (thus the separate seating during services)

to name a few

Um yeah, the goal is to get married because they can't get into heaven without a husband's permission. Sounds like you didn't learn that much from your friend.
