College Football--Big Ten Expansion

I don't follow sports, but I can't believe there's no government agency or governing NCAA-list body that helps shape this.

Leaving this to schools makes it all about money and nothing about student-athletes.

Only Notre Dame, Texas and Florida elevate the B1G ten. Maybe Florida State if they can’t get Florida. Then maybe Colorado or Arizona to make the number even and geographically for the mountain west and closing the geographic gap. UNC would cost money for a variety of reasons including small alumni base, political issues with larger NC state alumni base and split media market.

Free market capitalism ?

Agree that concern about student-athletes is lacking. However, student-athletes now have the ability to earn money during college from NIL (name, image, & likeness).

One player (freshman Arch Manning of Univ. of Texas) has an NIL contract potentially worth $3.5 million. not sure whether that figure is for one year or three years.

One unnamed 5 star recruit signed NIL contract that could pay him over $8 million by the end of his junior year in college football according to the Bleacher Report.

AAC in talks with Army to replace SMU. Army, like Navy, would join the AAC as a football only member.

Notre Dame / Stanford football series:

How is this a problem ? Of course, it should count as one of Notre Dame's required 5 ACC opponents per season.

Seems stupid to pay freshman a lot. Should wait for proven players 21 years old and transfer in. Freshmen almost always aren’t equal to the 22 year olds

Totally random with zero in common philosophy or geography.

The institutions are in a haphazard incoherent mess of leftovers. They must be shocked.

Correct.

The USA Today article cited above tells it like it is.

Every major conference will be like this in 5-10 years. SEC will have 20 plus teams. So will Big10. Now so will ACC. Power 3. Big12 will have 32 and not be power.

Big 12 has a lot of solid football program: Utah, Colorado, TCU, Okla State, BYU, WVU, Kansas State, Iowa State, U Cincinnati, & UCF.

That is the most you can say about the majority of teams in most of the time, and I would include FSU in that group in recent years. I think it’s still 2014 in the minds of FSU boosters, but the rest of the world has moved on. In the ACC, Clemson is the only “must watch” team, and their star seems to fading a bit.

Besides, SMU was a “must watch” team pre death penalty, and now they have a chance to get there again. We’ll see. Not to mention that there is value to the ACC teams to playing in the heart of the best football recruiting grounds in the US.

I played for Texas, so yes. I am biased. I grew up in Dallas watching the "Pony Express". They were cheaters and deserved the death penalty. I am sure that SMU alumni want to watch their team on TV.

My point is that I don't want to watch SMU play any school in the ACC. It's just lame TV. If Bama is playing LSU, Texas is plating Oklahoma, Georgia is playing Clemson what game would I watch? SMU vs whatever?

We’re not talking about now. Where will SMU be in 3-4 years? However, it sounds like you played against SMU when they were good. So, no, it’s not a surprise that you would bear a grudge and not want to watch. In any case, I noticed FSU is not on your “must watch” list, which was my point. And sure, I’ll watch the big matchups — I’ll probably watch LSU-FSU tomorrow night. But I probably wouldn’t if it was FSU and a random G5 team. I didn’t watch Bama or Georgia today. I have a friend who went to Wyoming, and we’ve followed the team since the time Josh Allen was playing, so I greatly enjoyed watching them beat Tech tonight. See how that works?

If you were recruited by Texas (and presumably other schools) then you also know that every school was doing it. I went to a Texas HS with a top football team, and I had multiple 4 & 5* friends recruited during that era, and they said there were recruiting violations at every school they visited. In fact, one friend said the most blatant was Rice. SMU’s mistake was being successful and beating Texas twice. (FWIW, Eric Dickerson’s infamous gold Trans Am was bought by an Aggie booster.) Punishment was one thing, but the NCAA was pushed hard by Texas and others to go for the death penalty, and it’s pretty clear that it was a terrible idea (judging by the fact that they’ve never done it again to any number of schools that have done things that were worse, by any measure). Who knows how SMU will do in the ACC, but now they’ll have their chance, which is long overdue.

Arch Manning is a redshirt, and his family has said he will not be taking NIL $$ until he plays. He signed one deal, but the $$ is all going to charity.

It’s actually smart on his part — any deal he would sign now would probably be a fraction of what it could be if he does turn out to be a star, and it’s not like he needs the money…

The teams remaining in the Big12 in 2024 had a *rough* day today.

The B1G looks like a scary conference next year. Too bad USC, Washington, and Oregon won't have their star QBs from this year.

Watched Rice v. Texas yesterday. The University of Texas at Austin is over-ranked at #11. Probably should be ranked in the area of #21 to #25.

Maybe US News should compile the football rankings.

Back when US News actually existed as a publication (they essentially don't do anything other than rank things as of 2010), I think they did have a voter for the AP rankings at different times!
