College Football--Big Ten Expansion

After last night, Fox has to be wondering what they were thinking with the Big10 contract

What do you mean? Great game. Minnesota kicked a winning FG with no time on the clock.

SMU, CAL, & STANFORD to become new ACC members.

SMU will receive no TV revenue for 9 years.

Cal & Stanford will start by receiving 30% shares each.

I hope SMU got the pledges from donors vowing to support the athletic department in writing. I wonder what non-revenue sports will get cut at Stanford and Cal once the athletics department realizing how much travel will cost

I suspect that SMU donors and supporters did it even better than in writing by giving assurances in cash.

SMU is a big winner even though SMU has offered and agreed to foregoing 9 years of TV/media GOR payments (but still eligible to receive other athletically generated payouts).

SMU athletes will now enjoy flying to both the West Coast & to the east Coast in shorter flights than those facing Cal & Stanford.

The addition of SMU, Cal, & Stanford brings an additional 2,200 student athletes to the ACC which already had almost 10,000 student athletes.

The ACC now gets a new footprint in the fertile football recruiting area of the state of Texas.

Not sure, but I suspect that many related to Cal, Stanford, & SMU will now be considering converting to Catholicism as Notre Dame led the way in this expansion effort.

None of the articles that I have read claim that the ACC Presidents vote for expansion was unanimous--so I wonder which school or schools flipped. My best guess is that Clemson flipped as possible SEC membership would be unlikely due to opposition from in-state rival Univ. of South Carolina--but, this is pure speculation.

I respect the old oil guys from SMU. They said they'd do anything and fund anything to become relevant again in football and they are putting up $$$!

8 years is a long ways away. Unless they paid all of it up front, it's going to be interesting to see how long they are willing to fly mens soccer across the county now that they have what they want with football. Unlike most schools, SMU doesn't even pretend to care about other sports. Here's there athletic department's landing page https://smumustangs.com/

NC State flipped

I worry about the Stanford and Cal athletic departments. They both, especially Stanford, play a large number of sports. Both have also had major financial issues in the last decade. I wonder how things will play out less money for so long.

The cost is much less of an issue than people think it is. A couple of million per program and the new revenue will greatly exceed that. Flying the men's soccer team across the country is only slightly more expensive than flying them to LA from SFO.
