College Football--Big Ten Expansion

Anonymous
Brett Yormark is a savvy guy. If something makes sense for the conference, I could see him swooping in. I know they had to keep things afloat in the Big 12 last year but they'd probably like to have some of those 2022 expansion slots back now!

"Never say never" may be an appropriate thought in light of the desperate circumstances facing Stanford & Cal.

Does the Big 12 Conference have the flexibility to accept a new member at less than a full share payout ?

Cal & Stanford will receive $8 million each plus additional payouts if admitted. SMU will forego media rights payouts for 5 to 7 years--unclear if SMU is eligible for other conference payouts.

(OP again):

To clarify my above post: SMU will forego media rights payout for seven (7) to nine (9) years, but will be eligible for NCAA basketball payout and for CFP (college football playoff) payout.

My thought is that if the ACC holds a formal vote tonight, then it is a done deal.

So much for that

The Big12 has already gone through a situation where two school had unequal distributions and it almost sunk them. If Yormark didn't out maneuver the Pac12 with this media deal, it would be Big12 schools scrambling. That was the expectation when Texas and Oklahoma bolted and the Big10, Pac12, and ACC formed their alliance (ironic that they said it was so strong and there was so much trust that they didn't need to reduce it to writing) with the expectation that they would be feasting on the carcass of the Big12

The ACC may consider conference expansion today since yesterday's conference call was postponed / cancelled due to the shooting on the UNC campus.

ACC Presidents will discuss possible conference expansion tonight (Tuesday, August 29, 2023) on a phone conference.

No meeting tonight "out of respect for the UNC incident".

One reports shares that none of the 4 schools in opposition to expansion has flipped, therefore, still one vote short.

ACC Commissioner leaving for CFP meeting in Dallas, Texas.

This has to be uncomfortable for Cal & Stanford. SMU is still a member of the AAC.

Interesting development:

CFP meeting in Dallas, Texas currently underway. Postponed making changes as much depends upon whether or not Pac-12 conference collapses or rebuilds. If Pac-12 survives, it can veto any proposed changes for the next two years.

Yesterday, the Nebraska women's volleyball team set a world record for attendance (92,003) at a female sporting event beating out the prior world record of 91,000.

Nebraska football games always draw large crowds.

VOTE MAY COME FRIDAY MORNING.

ACC Presidents will meet tomorrow, Friday, September 1, 2023, to discuss the possible addition of Cal, SMU, & Stanford.

No indication as to whether or not enough votes have been secured to expand.

Best fans in B1G (said as a fan of a rival B1G school).

Great example of a move killing rivalries and leading to a dying (dead now?) program

To be fair, they paired the volleyball game with a concert. The stands were only about half filled for the volleyball, but still impressive either way, even if it was a gimmick.

UNC will be a definite NO vote regarding expansion.

No vote will be taken if there are not enough yes votes.
