We are an Oakton family and have been fully supportive of the new traditional school the whole time. Oakton is at capacity already. Any new school to relieve overcrowding from the west is welcomed. I think the at-large school board rep (McKay maybe?) even said as much at the last working session when he mentioned relief for Oakton versus the scenario 4 which was trying to send more kids to Oakton.

We are a future Oakton family (zoned for there but kids aren't quite old enough yet) and I support the new HS too. But man I feel outnumbered by my neighbors. They do NOT want to be rezoned and will use any argument they can to prevent it. I'm kind of afraid to admit in real life that I would be ok with my kids going to the new school!

It's because your neighbors have older kids, right? We're a Crossfield family and the parents I know that want to stay at Oakton all already have kids in Oakton or their BFFs have kids at Oakton. I'm hesitant about my child going to a completely new HS in its first year (I have an 8th grader), but someone has to do it, so I'm open to the change, but I don't know any middle school parents who don't want their kids to go to Oakton. It's a pretty solid block of people.

+1 And another question: why would they do a tour for only 40 min of a 2 hour period allotted for said “open house”? They are literally creating the traffic nightmare they are trying to alleviate by using shuttle buses from Carson next door. Nothing is making sense!

PP here - Poorly written, but meant to say they are creating the problem they need shuttle buses to solve. Just open the place up and let people circulate through wherever they arrive. Don’t have remarks at the start and end! And what does Community Conversations mean? Is this like “people zoned to Westfield meet in the cafeteria”?

1. Parents in the community who don't want their high school aged to change schools (this can easily be mitigated by allowing families to grandfather them or just start this school as a 9th grade only)

3. Langley families concerned that when Coates/Upper McNair move to KAA, they will have to move to Herndon.

2. Oakton families concerned that they are going to be rezoned to South Lakes when Floris kids get rezoned to KAA.

mcnair and most of coates goes to westfield. they moved more of coates to herndon ES. moving the westfield zoned mcnair and coates doesn’t pull kids from herndon. why would that affect langley? bring back the 300 kids who pupil place out of herndon before you move other kids in. otherwise kids who get moved there will just pupil place out

at a previous community meeting reid said they want to limit pupil placing. so maybe they will be pulled back to base schools

I heard Reid say they might have to limit transportation but not pupil placing. Did she really say that? If they push through some of these boundary changes they are going to have even more pupil placements.

If they really want to limit pupil placements get rid of IB first.

yes she really said that. i have listened to 4 community meetings because she says things in the question portion that are prompted by families and it varies region to region. at one she said they want to limit pupil placing overall and get kids back at the their base school. she said they need to figure out programming to keep kids where they should go

It’s hard to make out the boundary change cart from here, it’s so far ahead of the programming horse.

Mostly, but some have younger kids. And some have kids at Oakton now who won’t even have to move because they’ll be juniors or seniors. I don’t know how to communicate that parents zoned for Oakton are not a monolith and that some with younger kids might welcome the chance for their kids to go to school closer to home. I fear the “Oakton forever” people’s voices will be loudest.

They probably printed 50 copies for the entire open house.

You need to go to the open house, email the school board members, try to schedule meetings, etc.

Also go to the new school meetings at Carson next week, and the Chantilly boundary study meeting.

We had sports games this morning.
Could someone who went to the open house please post pictures of any maps that were shared?

It hasn't happened yet. It runs 1230- 230. But +1 hoping someone who attends is either able to upload the maps later, or share a website addresss where they are located.

I am going, will share the maps if I can get my hand on a copy
