Spike Mendelsohn says DC a second-tier city

Anonymous
I love DC and I consider myself a little bit of a foodie.

And I agree with him. From a culinary perspective, DC is in the second tier. We can't compete with NY, LA and even Chicago.

I agree with him too but he is an idiot for saying it. Your business is in DC, you are being interviewed, you talk about what a privilege it is to work in such a world-class city blah blah blah, not how great it is being a big fish in a small pond.
He came across as pretty arrogant on the show so I am not surprised.

I think it's kind of a jackass thing to say - whatever, I don't think his food is that great anyway.

Second tier food for a second tier city. He fits in perfectly. His "Good Stuff" is not exactly haute cuisine.

Does anyone really care what this guy says?
But it's true that DC is second tier as far as restaurants go.

Lol. Good Stuff Eatery. I'm not that impressed by it. And "Top Chef" on the Food Network is like a kiss of death to a chef with real cooking credentials. It's the "Dancing With the Stars" of the culinary world.

In his damage-control comments, he invites people to come down to the restaurant "for a hug". Er, no thanks. You're skeevy.

Top Chef is on Bravo. Why do you say it's the kiss of death? Many, many of the chefs benefit from being on the show, and most have already had an established career and still do very well for themselves, winning James Beard awards, etc.

17:01 Knock yourself out. I've eaten in the best restaurants in New York and Paris, Taillevent, etc.. None the chefs have ever been on "Top Chef".

Say what you want about Top Chef (I've never watched it), but I adore Volt.

Top Chef is for young, rising chefs. Top Chef Masters is for established chefs.

DC is a second tier city compared to Boston/NY/San Fran/Chicago. At least we've got the government and the associated impact on our local economy. Second tier we are...but that's ok. I'll admit that it's not the best idea to dog your customer base though.

He was dumb for saying it but DC is a second tier city for food.

Everyone keeps saying how much better it is here now but I still can't find a decent bagel or a place to buy really good bread. In NY, good bakeries are everywhere.

Don't even start on good italian food.
