I’m PP…should note we got the all clear from the school, not the Health Department. |
| So in sum, it's basically a free-for-all. Choose whatever you want to do. |
Exactly. |
| But the coach was wearing a mask, and the team was practicing outside, right? |
|
Basically, your kid goes to school unless you get contacted by health department and told otherwise. It's not complicated at all. It's as if you all are complaining that, thankfully, we have a health department that might call you.
And really, even if someone in your class had COVID, the chance of your kid being considered a close contact is very low. They have to be in close proximity for extended period I think. If your kid does get delta, it will likely present like a normal cold. That's what the news is saying, and that's what a pedi told me he has seen. Delta is different. Just relax everybody. It's going to be ok. |
| I think we just have to take it on ourselves as individuals to protect the community the best we can and make smart, well-reasoned decisions. The county’s health department is a mess, the central administration for our public schools is the epitome of incompetence, but I find it reassuring that the OP is extremely conscientious and is trying to do the right thing. Her kid is vaccinated, wearing a mask responsibly, and has negative tests. It is ridiculous to keep him in quarantine and keep him out of school. His absence from class would have a negative impact on the teacher and students who need to work with him, on his family, and on his own well-being. I respect her decision to resist irrational advice from INOVA and send him to school. If all parents are even a little bit like OP, i think we will be fine. |
1) Then FCPS should explicitly state, “Your kid goes to school unless contacted by the health department.” 2) a “close contact” is defined as within 3 feet for at least 15 minutes per CDC and FCHD. So the chances are high that my kid would be a close contact if someone in his class or on his team tested positive. |
I don't think so if they were masked. |
There is an exception for k-12 school settings. https://www.doe.virginia.gov/support/health_medical/office/covid-19-faq-reopening.shtml 5. What happens if a student or staff is exposed to COVID-19 in schools? What is the definition of close contact in a school setting? Schools will be working with local health departments to conduct contract tracing, and provide guidance on appropriate steps following an exposure to an individual with COVID-19 in a school setting. It is important to note that the definition of close contact includes an exception for K-12 settings for the purposes of case investigation and contact tracing. In general, VDH uses proximity of within 6 feet for a total of 15 minutes or more within 24 hours to determine the need for quarantining persons who have had close contact exposure to someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19. But in indoor K-12 settings, a student who is within 3 to 6 feet of an infected student is not considered a close contact as long as both students are wearing masks. This exception does not apply to teachers, staff, or other adults in indoor K-12 settings. |
Less than 3 feet is a close contact even if masked. |

Looks like there are anxious parents everywhere in DMV area and not just on DCUM as some are claiming..
'It's just cruel': Parents push for virtual learning options again as COVID numbers spike https://wjla.com/news/back-to-school/its-just-cruel-parents-push-for-virtual-learning-options-again-as-covid-numbers-spike?_gl=1*c1qrlq*_ga*MEhYa3RpYjNNdjVMODFFN19XRGdjbzRLUTk3amNLWkFnMkVqb2JvTTUyOXZaOFhUWjlldU9XZENtd3dRcHEteA.. |
They interviewed one of the 1,300 people that signed that survey. If you mean not all of those 1,300 people are posting on DCUM, I'd agree with you. All the parents/kids I saw at our back-to-school yesterday looked really excited and relaxed. |
Also, FC Health Dept is a mess. FCPS has a clear policy on the website that follows the CDC. Yet the HD is directing vaccinated students to do differently. That is what is making this whole thing confusing. |
Same at our school. Everyone was happy to be back. I asked our principal if she’s heard from parents. She said she’s only heard from one parent who called about being nervous. At our staff meeting, teachers shared how excited both they and families were. I was surprised how overwhelmed (with joy) I was seeing so many kids at Open House. |
Yep. All the kids, parents, and teachers I saw were wearing masks without a blip, but you could still see the smiles in so many eyes. Our second grade teacher was practically glowing! |
