At 88, Ms. Feinstein sometimes struggles to recall the names of colleagues, frequently has little recollection of meetings or telephone conversations, and at times walks around in a state of befuddlement — including about why she is increasingly dogged by questions about whether she is fit to serve in the Senate representing the 40 million residents of California, according to half a dozen lawmakers and aides who spoke about the situation on the condition of anonymity.

On Capitol Hill, it is widely — though always privately — acknowledged that Ms. Feinstein suffers from acute short-term memory issues that on some days are ignorable, but on others raise concern among those who interact with her.

Ms. Feinstein is often engaged during meetings and phone conversations, usually coming prepared and taking notes. But hours later, she will often have forgotten those interactions, said the people familiar with the situation, who insisted that they not be named because they did not want to be quoted disparaging a figure they respect.

Some of them said they did not expect her to serve out her term ending in 2024 under the circumstances, even though she refuses to engage in conversations about stepping down.

She was showing signs of decline 4 years ago too. People were just too polite to push her out and now we have the situation today.

This is what happens when you abandon common sense in the name of rights. There should be a mandatory retirement age (even for house/senate, which was stupidly always exempt). Keeping one aged person who has kept their wits is not worth being burdened with many who have. But in a rights-oriented society, we are not allowed to have this discussion.

Four years ago I suggested on this board that a declining octogenarian wasn’t optimal to lead California which has a deep bench of talent that could advance for more energetic Leadership of our largest state and was called “ageist.” But I was right. She’s done little to nothing of note in her term, and most of her notable actions have been embarrassing ones. (Supreme Court hearings)

“I am announcing today I will not run for reelection in 2024 but intend to accomplish as much for California as I can through the end of next year when my term ends,” Feinstein, 89, said in the statement.

Later on Tuesday, reporters at the Capitol asked her about the announcement.

“I haven’t made that decision,” she said, according to Savannah Behrman of the National Journal. “I haven’t released anything.”

A Feinstein staffer then told her, “We put out the statement.”

“You put out the statement?” the senator replied, seemingly surprised.

Grassley is more spry that many of the younger Senators.
He is as sharp as a whip and in good physical shape. He still runs 3 miles a day 4 days a week.

Feinstein clearly is having memory issues.

There should not be limits of the right of the people to choose who they want. If they want to elect someone 110 they should be able to. It is the right of the people not some line that some of the people want to draw. The age should also be lifted on the other end as well.
