Why would they go back to the classrooms if there are no plans for any kids to be in school? |
Because they had to go back to clear our their classrooms 2 weeks ago. |
but ^PP is suggesting that they are there now. |
I was in my middle school and in one DC’s HS and did not see any preparations. I was told by a building service worker that when hand sanitizer stations were installed for H1N1, it took 3 weeks. I had to hand-deliver out of state school records for a DC, which is why I was at the HS. We got a hard-sell to pick up a Chromebook for him up in Rockville. Since we bought him a brand new laptop as an 8th grade graduation present (coming from private), we declined, but they reminded us that hot spots are still available as well. They don’t know DH and I work for MCPS so I think they were hinting that school likely opens in DL. |
Maybe they weren't hinting, maybe they were outright telling you, but since they don't make the decision, they don't know. It has as much validity as me telling you that school likely opens on Mars. |
They may not have made a decision, but we can certainly look at clues that will influence their decision. The next BOE meeting is a week from today, and we can expect some kind of decision then. At that point, they have 7 weeks until school opens. If certain preparations for in-person learning haven't been made before then, there just would not be sufficient time to implement them in 7 weeks, and the inability to implement a certain option would certainly affect their decision about choosing that option. |
| I wish everyone would just say no opening til October DL first than if 2nd wave stsy DL if not 2nd quarter inschool |
The BoE is going to tell us, "Well, we agree that there should be school, but whoops, there's enough time to do that, so remote instruction it is!"? I don't think so. |
I know it sounds almost comical, but I think so. I watched the BOE meeting last week. Not a single board member asked questions about how to implement in-person learning this fall. Instead, they'd talk about how they are praying for kids, or how MCPS did such a great job distributing meals. For example, the operations team showed photos of how a classroom would look layout-wise with spaced desks. No one asked how that affects school capacity (30%? 50%?) nor how much effort it would take to set up classrooms based on those plans. It's like no one realizes the immense effort to implement any sort of plan. It's worrisome. |
Under any plan there will be a large DL component. The best we will get is 2 days/week of in-person instruction. So I’m sure they would urge you to get a laptop and hotspot no matter which way they go in the fall. |
This. The Board of Education Meeting was embarrassing. I certainly hope they are doing more on this outside of these announced meeting times, because they made zero progress in that meeting. I can't believe these are the people making decisions for this huge district. They are entirely focused on the achievement gap and making sure everyone gets meals (yes, important, but so is education). There was very little about school in the Fall. |
I think a lot of parents aren't following this closely, and just assume it'll be either full time or part-time in-person when August 31 rolls around. They're in for a big surprise. |
Oy. |
You don't need to be following closely; you just need to think of the massive amount of planning and execution required for a successful hybrid/part-time in person approach, and the (in)capabilities of a system as large as MCPS to pull that off successfully in the time that it has. (I guess we could have some sort of Trumpian miracle and full-time in-person school in the fall, but that actually would be even harder to impossible if you also want some modicum of social-distancing and safety protocols.) There is such a yawning gap between what MCPS may want to do and what it can do, and there are things that it must do (e.g., feed kids who depend on schools for meals, and that problem will only get worse this fall). People get completely bent out of shape when this is pointed out, so I guess they will just need to be surprised. |
And yet all the neighboring counties have managed to figure it out. |
