Just spoke to an MCPS teacher who said she was 99% sure MCPS will be DL in the fall

Smartest most responsible thing to do. I swear I saw a Jan date posted they have since retracted. I am all in for safe and healthy school start whenever. And I work.

I never would have believed there were so many people posting on DCUM that the safest, most responsible thing to do is for kids to miss 1 1/3 years of school.

It’s called a pandemic.

And when the pandemic is gone the devastatingly poor decisions that were made during it will continue to harm our children for years to come.

Correct. No matter the decisions made now it will continue to harm people. Hence, a crisis.

It's called taking the easy way out.

It's called ignoring the science.

It's called sacrificing our children.

And honestly the MD numbers are good. There is absolutely no reason for this. I have no doubt that based on the information they just released the whole year will be digital. It's easier for them then trying to actually make things work for in school learning. They are lazy and simply don't care.

It's disgusting and wrong and I wish there was something that could be done but I don't think there is.

Yes.

But there are things that can be done. Start by e-mailing the BoE and asking everyone you know to do so as well.

It will be DL only. Get used to it.

Dramatic much? Where’s the sacrifice. Is this all crummy? Sure. Would we all like to be back to normal? Yep. But you aren’t dying, your kids aren’t dying, (some people’s are though). Your kids are at home and they can learn at home. I’m hoping we can go back in the fall, too but ridiculous, over-the-top posts like this just make us all sound like hysterical whack jobs. This isn’t the end of the world. You can handle this.

I'm glad things are fine for you, I really am. There are lots of people things are not fine for.

I just heard that as well. There was a post on a Facebook page. Start with DL and move to part time in person starting Thanksgiving. Sounds like a doomed plan.

What FB page? I’m an MCPS employee and would really like to know the plan!

+1 - I’m also an MCPS employee and haven’t heard this, would love to see these posts.

The reason is because they figure if they keep pushing it it's money they don't have to spend on any accommodations for making in school learning safe. They figure this way, they save money and they are hoping by next year they won't have to worry about it and can start school normally.

They are taking the easiest way out for THEM. Thinking of no one else. They are taking the path that requires them to do the least. They can send all the surveys, have all the meetings but in the end they are doing what THEY want to do.

From FB:
MCPS will be presenting a draft plan for what school will look like in the fall to the BOE at Tuesday's BOE meeting (scheduled for 12:10 pm). We have received some information about what is expected to be in the plan.

It is our understanding that MCPS is planning to bring back students in transition grades (pre-K/K, 6, and 9) first, and other grades in phases. School schedules in person and online will vary by school (ES/MS/HS). Students in all grades will start the year online, and MCPS hopes to have all willing students back in school buildings for 1-2 days a week by Thanksgiving. Some of the bigger challenges include transportation (12 students on a bus instead of up to 77) and having enough teachers to teach smaller classes in person while simultaneously teaching students in online classes at home. MCPS is hoping to have some students back in buildings 2 times a week as early as September (but not from day one). They just don’t think all students will be back in buildings 1-2 days a week until later in the fall.

MCPS is considering the parent feedback from the survey, adjusting its plans based on feedback, and intending to request public feedback on the fall plans this month.

There will be an online only option for families, just as with other jurisdictions. Fairfax County is promising at least 2 days/week in school, and 2 days online, and Arlington County is planning 2 days/week in school and distance learning on 3 days. MCPS is looking at students in school 2 days/week, too.

If this is accurate, MCPS is saying: it's just too tough, we can't figure it out, so we'll just kind of dribble along with remote instruction and see what happens.
