As I am horrified by the idea of rats, I fill my feeders solely with hot meat bird seeds. It costs more but it saves me from the headache of worrying about squirrels and rats. Mammals will not go near the hot pepper, which does not harm birds. I do have a feeder with nyger seed, which mammals also won't eat. |

Hummingbird feeders are good for first attracting hummingbirds, and once the juveniles come out in July, they enjoy playing around them.
However, I find they usually prefer the flower feast I put out for them. I have about ten varieties of salvia, cuphea, native honeysuckle, and cardinal flowers. In the past, they have really liked flowers I have ordered, especially porterweed. They did not survive the shipment this year. Titothonia was also a success; the Lion's Ear less so. I am trying shrimp flowers this year; I was surprised to find them at American Plant. I have a small fairly small backyard in NW DC. |
This is a really interesting article. I've never been tempted to lure birds with mice, but I'll definitely avoid doing it in the future. The points would seem to apply to rare birds more than to feeder birds, I think. |

+1 Birds are big disease carriers. There are more than plenty around, and they have more than enough food. |
