Suit by Covington Catholic student against Washington Post dismissed

It was reported that the students were mocking and jeering the Native Americans - a lie

Bullshit. They were doing Tomahawk chants, a racist gesture that's absolutely mocking in context. Our media has internalized so much of the right wing lies about the media that they're fell all over themselves to exonerate these kids, when anyone who watched the videos knows that they were absolutely making racist taunts at an old man.

You think a newspaper shouldn't defend their First Amendment rights? They should just roll over?

Why?

The "old man" had a sidekick with a camera. He walked up to the kids--not vice versa. He is an activist--not a nobody. And, his much touted Vietnam vet experience was debunked. He served during the Vietnam war and said that he was a Vietnam vet several times on camera--not just a Vietnam era vet. His service was also not the best. He was in the brig. This whole event was deliberate on his part.

He lied on CNN and said the kids were mocking the African American men--when, in reality, it was just the opposite.

He made them make a racist gesture? Do you think he has secret mind powers? He walked up to them, was, I guess mildly provocative, and they responded by mocking him and his culture. You know what what kind of person responds to a slight provocation with racism? A racist.

So what does that have to do with this defamation suit against the Washington Post?

It is not racist. So, the entire Atlanta Braves home crowd is racist? The entire Florida State home crowd? Kansas City Chiefs home crowd?

Why would he walk up to them? He was looking for trouble. His fault.

Those words, "in context", were ignored by you.

Okay.

And WaPo should not have reported what he did?

Really? How do you know what the context of the students was? Did they tell you?

They weren't at a basketball game.

They're making racist gestures, absolutely. I have no idea if they are racist personally, but they're doing a racist thing. This isn't new. Native people have been pointing out that the chop is racist pretty much as soon as it spread to the Braves.

In this context, which isn't even a sporting event with a history of doing the chop, it's even more obvious. Why do you see a Native man and decide to do the Tomahawk Chop at him? To mock him and his culture, there's no other conceivable explanation.

They should have verified what was alleged to have happened, before they reported it.

Please. Many of us have watched several of the videos of this incident and we're arguing about it. WaPo's reporting was fine. They also ran opinion articles about it. This kid can't seem to tell them apart. Can't even seem to tell the various news agencies apart.

I know of no evidence, anywhere, that the use of the tomahawk chop was ever intended to be racist or demeaning. In any situation, sports venues, or otherwise.
