Border at ‘Breaking Point’ as More than 76,000 Migrants Cross in a Month

Question....

When seeking asylum, isn't it incumbent upon the seeker of asylum to request it in the first country in which he or she arrives?

And there's nothing anyone wants to do to help their home countries deal with the problems, so as to make them more safe and stable so that there would be less people fleeing. The refugees showing up at our border are a symptom, but instead they are treated as the disease, and that approach will never solve anything, because people desperate to flee will continue to do so. It's like there's broken glass on your kitchen floor and you're complaining about how many band-aids you've used and how you need shoes with thicker soles instead of even giving any consideration to sweeping the glass up. Instead we should be looking to help those countries. But we don't even want to, because they are "shitholes" not worthy of further consideration, per brilliant Trump foreign policy.

Uhh did you 2 forget about mexico who wanted to give them residency? They also had the option to travel to closer countries which are just as safe. We have central americas gangs in the US too but then again we also have the almighthy dollar that attracts them. So its greed bringing them here plain and simple.

You need to learn how to quote. My parents are first gen latin americans who came here legally. My relative is also currently visiting from there legally. The people I mentioned are not refugees like venezuelans and are coming in illegally. No respect for our laws.

We will never get anywhere if every time one side is presented with facts the response is "but Trump!" And then they ignore literally mountains of data to focus on an anecdote.

Geez. Yes he hired illegal immigrants. Now let's move on to solutions for this crisis of illegal immigration that both liberal leaning, illegal immigration supporting, prominent newspapers have acknowledged.

The hypocrisy is strong with this one.

Again no actual solutions. Just one off quips (that aren't clever)
Okay. Prosecute to the fullest every employer for hiring illegal immigrants. Now what is your solution to the crisis of 76k+ per month at the border?

Practice what you preach, honey. It's hard to take you seriously when you give your Dear Leader a pass on what you accuse Democrats of.

Fantastic. No ideas.

The president sn't my dear anything.

What great ideas do you have?

There is a lot we can do or at least try:
-Implementation of a safe third country agreement with Mexico
-Put judges on the border/have them conduct the initial interview instead of BP. Most fail to get asylum so if they make the initial interview more stringent we will spend less money for these people moving through an asylum system they will ultimately fail
-no release into the interior of the country while your case is being heard, no granting of work visas unless you are granted asylum
- if they have been released previously, have law enforcement check on them at the address listed. Chances are they are staying with their illegal aunt/uncle/cousin/sibling/parent
- drones, facial recognition at the border

And finally... a physical barrier to keep them out in the first place

Why didn't the GOP start to implement any of this aggresively during the two years they had complete control? They instead chose to pass the tax cut and try to derail Obamacare. It's funny how the the border issue suddenly became an "emergency" once it became clear the Democrats were going to take back the House.

They didn't have "complete control." Many of the above ideas require a minimum 60 vote in the Senate. They didn't have that.

False. Dems support more of those things than you claim. Dems have been supportive of more judges, more tech at the border, et cetera. But instead we just got this Trumpian stuff about a big shiny wall without tech, no judges, et cetera. Republicans had an opportunity to do good and get a lot of things that both sides could support, but instead squandered it by just mindlessly tribally rallying behind Trump's nonsense.

This is such a BS statement. The plan has ALWAYS been to include technology, personnel, and more space for detentions. Where is the world are you getting your information?

From Trump. All he blathers about is the wall.

Again, Trump talks in sound bytes and rhetoric. Though you would like to paint him as a dictator, he has the entire Republican party working on these other efforts and not only a wall.

But ICYMI, he laid out these other efforts during the shutdown when he talked from the Oval Office about the plans.

It's kind of funny that those lambasting Trump and supporters for not talking or thinking past sound bytes on the wall yet they are the ones that are only picking up on these sound bytes. Anyone well read and even reasonably keeping up with policy would know that many other methods have been deployed since 2017.

Trump is making your dream of increased worker visas come true. Also, H2As are the visas used by farm workers. HIBs are used by skilled workers including models, apparently.

No, there is no such law in Mexico or the US. The EU does require that you seek asylum in the first EU country you reach, if you want to stay in the EU. But there is nothing like that.for these refugees.

What?!?!? Why were you Democrats quiet when President Obama was putting migrant children in cages?????

What a MASSIVE cover-up under President Obama!

Many are resettling in Mexico, but Mexico has even less ability to absorb immigrants than we do.

If we were going to be smart.about this, we'd help Central American police forces and their economies so people will want to stay. It really is a mess there. As long as things are awful there and they can get a job here, they will keep coming, wall or no wall.

If there are pictures, how could there be a coverup? That was an AP stock photo. Why didn't Fox News report it?

And also, family separations under Obama were very rare, unlike under Trump's.

https://www.politifact.com/punditfact/statements/2018/jun/19/matt-schlapp/no-donald-trumps-separation-immigrant-families-was/

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/was-law-separate-families-passed-1997/

The rumors correctly suggested that “family detention” as a whole came before the Trump administration, but as of August 2015 intact families at the border were rarely separated.

How many parents are unable to find their children who were taken from them under the Obama administration vs the Trump's administration.

How do you measure the "ability to absorb immigrants"?

How EXACTLY would you like to be smart about “helping” corrupted Central American police forces? Don’t be so naive, my friend.
