Got reject letter

Cogat 142
NNAT 114
GBRS: Dont know

Does it make sense to re appeal? Or try giving Wisc or its too late now?

Contact your AART and ask for a copy of the packet, which will include the GBRS. Mine sent it home with DC the next day.
Not too late to appeal. If you want to appeal with a WISC, contact GMU or a private provider.

Picked by the file his GBRS is 12. I noticed that the form where the Cogat scores are filled had scores from last year, is this normal?

Do you mean both his 2nd and 3rd grade CogAT scores were included? Or only 2nd (I am assuming her retook it in 3rd for purposes of reapplying)?

Only 2nd Grade was included, 3rd grade score was not there in the file

When my child applied in 3rd grade only his 3rd grade scores were there (they were better than his second grade scores). I think that improved his chances.

Also, read the comments in the GBRS. I think they are very telling. I've seen a few packets (from my kids and friends) and you can often tell the difference between a kid with lots of detailed interesting comments and just run of the mill basic comments. They are not allowed to write negative things, so you have to read between the lines. I knew my DC had a very good chance when he had a page and a half of very specific detailed comments, including "Little Johnny often engages adults in conversation because he lacks an intellectual peer in his class." There are some comments, like that one, that very clearly indicate the teachers think the child needs AAP, verses the more general comments that can be found.

Did you have your third grader retake through FCPS? I suspect DC's old second grade scores were still there because those were the from the test assessed by FCPS while the new scores were from GMU.

Retake was in school and I got response from AART teacher that it was mistake and new score were not sent, so we will do a re appeal based on new score

I'm sure that was a bit of a relief to hear, even though it stinks that you have to now wait another two months!

Does anyone know about the Willow Springs AAP center?

My friend used to teach there and said a lot of the AAP parents were nuts-lots of Kumon, worried about getting into TJ in 3rd grade, freak outs and emailing the teachers about any grade less than a 4. It is a big, crowded school.

A denial will not have the word "accepted" in the letter . Why do you want to go by the number or color of the sheets?

Yippee! A neighbor of mine and classmate of my kid presumably. Mine is on, too, with similar scores.

Eligibility letter doesn’t have the word accepted. It simply says the central committee has determined your child is eligible for level iv
.

The point is to read the letter instead of looking for number of sheets or color of the sheets

Obviously this was not a surprise but sharing for a data point. DC has a 123 WISC that we will appeal with because we have it and why not. Hopefully Level III/Advanced math will be a positive option.

OP here. Thank you. We are obviously not that obsessed and it will be a good group of smart kids to learn/ play with.

Getting file today to see GBRS. I know scores are a little low but I expected high GBRS and he is in top reading and math and bored in school currently so I thought a holistic review might get him in. He is among the youngest of second graders but I don’t think they consider that.
May or may not do WISC to appeal. I think he’d be much happier in AAP but not sure our center (Bull Run) is necessarily the end-all be-all.

Updat, Met with AART
GBRS 13
DRA 34. (at the time back then)

School had some strong work samples in addition to what I had submitted. AART thought we have nothing to lose and suggested appealing given his strong all-around file. I think we will appeal, as it’s true we have nothing to lose.

Im truly not trying to be mean at all but why did the aart think he had a strong all around file? Presumably lots of kids have good work samples and that then leaves you with only a single data point (good gbrs) pointing towards admission. A medium high dra doesn’t show out of the box thinking.

Received acceptance (eligibility) letter today. My child attends Oakton Elementary, but we have the option of switching to Sunrise Valley. Submitted full parent packet with referral letters and work samples.

NNAT: 160
COGAT: low 120's (121?)
Unsure on GBRS or DRA, but I suspect the DRA is very high.

We had an unusually large variance between NNAT and COGAT. What can you say, the kid is 7... Just one data point, but our experience was that a high NNAT can overcome a low (for AAP) COGAT.

Anyone have thoughts on AAP at Oakton or Sunrise Valley?
