Is my child gifted? In Arlington magazine this month

APS built the addition to hold 684 kids and they are already cramming 730 into the school this year and will be between 770-780 next year when the boundary refinements are fully phased in. Oh, and construction was delayed for six months so those 730 kids are using a double wide trailer for gym until January and have no field until Fall of 2017. They didn't have a gym or field or playground last year either. Meanwhile Discovery, Nottingham, and Jamestown all sit under capacity. And the HB parents are whining about not having an "on-site" field for Ultimate Frisbee at the $100M Wilson site, even though the County has already said that they will pay to bus the kids to a nearby park for practice each day until the fire station is moved. There is no doubt that we have inequity in APS-- but it is not just a north vs south thing.

We don't need a $100M fancy school at HB. We need something basic, with the appropriate accomodations for the Stratford program. The design is over the top (have you looked at the pics?) and we're not even expanding the size of HB in the process. We should be putting at least 1,000 kids in that building for $100M, not 775 kids. Let's not forget that the SB is talking about putting 1,000 HS kids into the Ed Center space as a solution to the HS overcrowding and that location is the size of a postage stamp!

+1 Million

What APS and Chadwick did to McKinley is appalling. It's only getting worse, by tnthats OK BD Nottingham will be at capacity in 10 years. Where were the boundary changes sending kids before the nasty petition? What school? Oh yeah. Maybe one with more money and clout.

What I hope McKinley parents and Southies have learned is that you need to organize, and make so much noise that they can't ignore you. Because if you're sitting back and thinking that they are going to do the right thing on their own, you're going to be sorely disappointed. They're going to cave to the most vocal and organized groups.

And why are they allowing transfers (with transportation provided) at the MS and HS level to any school under 120% capacity, but not the ES level? If you would prefer to transfer to Jamestown, Nottingham, or Discovery rather than have your child at a grossly overcrowded school, you should be able.

A large portion of south Arlington parents don't speak English, and are here illegally. They are not going to speak up. Besides, they don't see any problems anyway.

The families at McKinley, Taylor & Glebe can certainly speak up.

APS Policy is no more pullouts in elementary, although a few laggard schools are still continuing with it. All differentiation is by classroom teachers. Identification process is a portfolio-based approach for all schools. There are universal screening tests in 2nd (Naglieri) and 4th (CogAt). If your kid has a 160 IQ thru private testing and doesn't get in, ignore the school and appeal to the county office - they will let him/her in. Once identified as gifted, the identification stays through graduation.
