Is my child gifted? In Arlington magazine this month

(well maybe not Stratford, maybe that should go to Reed site).

But Stratford and HB wanted to stay together. Considering the tone from certain parents that other kids are keepin' their genius children down, I'd think they'd be happy about that.

Although it does not appear to be in the nature of some parents to be happy, ever.

Reed is in the new CIP for ES seats. They haven't decided on the type of school, but when the numbers come out in October, they will have a better idea of which direction they should go. With McKinley at 730 now, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a neighborhood element to the school.

Anyway, Reed is going to be used for Stratford temporarily, but it's not the long-term solution.

Then can people stop complaining about it?

No. It's bad planning. We need bigger schools and we have limited space. Not using the space that we have efficiently is outrageous. Why build a new school for such a small amount of kids? (Discovery, HB, even Swanson)

SO:

Free Wilson site is no good for 1,300 student school
Shouldn't spend the money to build a 1,000 seat school
No other site for 1,300 student school except current HB site but then need to rebuild/enlarge it AND find another site for HB/Stratford students

WTF are they supposed to do

Seriously, someone please tell me

Did you mean Swanson?

I'm as blame-y as the next person, but what on Earth is your objection to the way Swanson was built 70+ years ago?

Oh, sorry. Meant Stafford. That is a really big lot. It can be made into a bigger middle school.

I think the issue there is lack of money; remember it's happening at the same time as the HB rebuild and the new S Arlingotn ES. So they get 1,000 MS seats now at Stratford with more limited renovations and could add 300 more in the future.

no it's not money issue. new strafford parent didn't want a "huge" MS.

Of course they didn't. Just like Discovery parents didn't want a big elementary school. In the meantime, other schools continue to add trailers and the money and space runs out. It's ridiculous.

Don't worry. The new elementary school in south Arlington is slated to be huge and have zero bells and whistles. No slides for southie poors.

Those of you who think only S. Arl gets screwed need to visit McKinley. APS built the addition to hold 684 kids and they are already cramming 730 into the school this year and will be between 770-780 next year when the boundary refinements are fully phased in. Oh, and construction was delayed for six months so those 730 kids are using a double wide trailer for gym until January and have no field until Fall of 2017. They didn't have a gym or field or playground last year either. Meanwhile Discovery, Nottingham, and Jamestown all sit under capacity. And the HB parents are whining about not having an "on-site" field for Ultimate Frisbee at the $100M Wilson site, even though the County has already said that they will pay to bus the kids to a nearby park for practice each day until the fire station is moved. There is no doubt that we have inequity in APS-- but it is not just a north vs south thing.

We don't need a $100M fancy school at HB. We need something basic, with the appropriate accomodations for the Stratford program. The design is over the top (have you looked at the pics?) and we're not even expanding the size of HB in the process. We should be putting at least 1,000 kids in that building for $100M, not 775 kids. Let's not forget that the SB is talking about putting 1,000 HS kids into the Ed Center space as a solution to the HS overcrowding and that location is the size of a postage stamp!

+1 Million

What APS and Chadwick did to McKinley is appalling. It's only getting worse, by tnthats OK BD Nottingham will be at capacity in 10 years. Where were the boundary changes sending kids before the nasty petition? What school? Oh yeah. Maybe one with more money and clout.

What I hope McKinley parents and Southies have learned is that you need to organize, and make so much noise that they can't ignore you. Because if you're sitting back and thinking that they are going to do the right thing on their own, you're going to be sorely disappointed. They're going to cave to the most vocal and organized groups.

And why are they allowing transfers (with transportation provided) at the MS and HS level to any school under 120% capacity, but not the ES level? If you would prefer to transfer to Jamestown, Nottingham, or Discovery rather than have your child at a grossly overcrowded school, you should be able.

That is the million dollar question!

Did anyone go to the school board meeting last night? They were supposed to discuss the high school redistricting...
