Ugh! That means more people at the Safeway at Sangamore. Boo!

Someone upthread said that the Soviet Safeway was what the Georgetown Safeway was called circa 1980. That’s incorrect, as far as I know. The Soviet Safeway was (is?) the name for the Safeway on 17th & Corcoran in DuPont (long lines, $hitty selection of fresh food). The Gtown one was always the Social Safeway bc 24/7, lots of coeds and young ppl late at night.

There have been several “Soviet Safeways” in the area over the years. Who knows which was the original.

Agree that the original "Soviet Safeway" is on 17th Street and Corcoran.

Georgetown has always been the "Social Safeway." Oddly I miss the old one as it was more social than this new behemoth. Was much easier to park at the old one as well. I digress.

Never knew that there is a "SEXY" Safeway!

Yes! These are the Soviet and social Safeways as I understood it when I was in school here in the early 00s. I have been to the supposedly sexy Safeway and....I would not have come up with that one.

Are they finally going to build condos above a new grocery? Condos would mean more people which would mean better retail along MacArthur!

We used to live in one of those “low price condos” on Macarthur; didn’t have a car and it was so convenient - being able to walk over to Safeway on a weekend. Weekdays we would shop in Georgetown...
I am glad Black Salt is still there. We loved it.
Will miss Safeway (was hoping to bring my kid to visit as this is where he spent the first few months of his life- Palisades I mean, not Safeway!)

Safeway sucks anyway, they are owned by the same people as the National Enquirer. And Betsy De Voses friends. Don't shop there if you can avoid it.

Seriously ?? They literally only sell junky crap at Safeway. This explains a lot!

Owned by a big private equity firm called Cerberus (as in the dog with 3 head guarding the gates of hell). Linked all manner of unsavory crap, semi automatic guns and the privatization of wars. The CEO Stephen Feinberg is a big Trump donor and Trump has returned the favor.

The food is so bad there it’s like they’re trying to kill you with it. Do they also own any healthcare companies?

Definitely the unSafeway when I lived there in the 80s during the crack epidemic.

It seems now that it is actually finally closing. May 4 will be the final day. According to a note from Mary Cheh, the site has been sold although no one seems to know who the new owner is. If anyone has a Property’s Shark subscription and can do some digging, that would be awesome.

I am thrilled that Safeway pulled and put that in. Peopel in the neighborhood got what they wanted.

Why were people opposed? What was Safeway asking to do?

This.
