Palisades: Safeway is closing

Anonymous
So just like the Safeway property in Tenleytown was sold with a covenant prohibiting any new grocery store on the property, now Safeway is selling the Palisades store with the same conditions. The difference is that in Tenleytown, there are two Whole Foods and two Giant within relatively short distances. Will this be a net negative for Palisades in terms of local convenience?

Yes .

That's sad.

Don't worry. They'll put up a cool 7 story mixed use building with a Five Guys and second CVS on the ground floor. A neighborhood can never have too many. CVS carries a good supply of convenience foods.

How long can this convenant last? Seems kind of peevy to ban competition just cause u can't cut it.

We may not like the covenant but it's not unreasonable. Safeway, recently sold, is in the middle of a corporate retrenchment. Rather than invest in smaller city stores, they evidently have decided to consolidate and drive traffic to oversized suburban super enters like the one built in north Georgetown. They then don't want a new store coming in to property they've owned and compete for customers in their "territory." Once the giant Giant opens at Wisconsin and Macomb it would not surprise if Giant starts to close smaller stores like VanNess. Personally I think that 60,000 + sq ft "back-the-SUV-up "
"suburban megastores are out of place in the DC market, but this is the one-size-fits-all model that Safeway and Giant seems to have invested in. So it's logical that they want to drive traffic to them, even if it means shrinking their smaller store footprint.

The reason they are leaving is because a bunch of jealous, geriatric ninnies were blocking Safeway from making logical redevelopment plans. Beating garbage cans, putting signs in yards. Totally sucks we will not have a grocery store now.

It's always the same bunch ranting + the bunch of imbecilic corpses on the ANC = no grocery store for the normal, busy families who have no time for this kind of stupidity.

I hope people remember this next time they want to interfere in the affairs of a private business.

They CAN cut it - they were blocked from putting nicer Safeway there by a bunch of old goons who, with the ANC, effectively drove our one grocery store away. Thanks!

It was crazy at the 4th of July Parade - people were booing at the safeway driver.

I am thrilled that Safeway pulled and put that in. Peopel in the neighborhood got what they wanted.

Yup. Beat Safeway away with sticks. Guess Safeway will have the last laugh.

Why don't they want a Safeway?

Asking from near Old Town where there are many grocery stores

Wrong.

The hedge fund that owns Safeway is cash strapped and selling valuable real estate parcels. The want Palisades residents to have to go the social Safeway or the ballet petite safeway instead of a replacement store.

Why were people opposed? What was Safeway asking to do?

Safeway wanted to put condos above (which makes total sense). Bunch of neighborhood wackos (mostly old ppl) emerged to wage war with Safeway. So dumb.

Say what? There retail condos all over the city. Dumb move...especially with the cost of the most condos in DC. Trust me-riff-raf can't afford any condos inside beltway.
