NO, many Catholics are not Christians. MIL is one. Mean and petty and two-faced to everyone. To be a Christian you have to push aside all the Catholic rules, regs, prostrations and ask "Do I really take Jesus in my heart as my saviour and do I commit to lean a god-centered life, and to try to let him work through my life". Most Catholics don't do that. They think if they go to Mass, they can raise hell during the week and it doen't count because they can get absolved at the Confessional.

Wow, this is nasty. CALM DOWN.

+1

And people deny that there are anti-Catholic bigots in society.

I the we know they exist. But criticism of Catholic Church is not ipso facto bigotry.

Of course criticism of anything or anyone may be deserved - or it may be bigotry. In top PP's case it's the latter.

We have been married for more than 20 years. He's Catholic, I'm Protestant. We only attended church a few times with his parents and then again when we were church shopping for our wedding. (We found a Protestant one that married us -- we didn't return after the wedding.) He was a regular churchgoer through high school though. But he didn't care for any of the church's stance on women's issues, etc. And then all the church scandals with priests really put him off Catholicism.

After all these many years of not attending church, we lucked into a Protestant one that's a perfect fit for both of us! He loves it there, and recently joined. It's so great to be happy at the same church together. I didn't think it would actually ever happen.

Congrats!!!!!

Hey, 1st PP, you may not think comparing your MIL to all Catholics is bigoted, but the rest of us do.

No, the "rest" of us don't. Some posters here do -- possibly only one, it's hard to tell.

OP here again, and what this long thread illustrates is how divisive the Catholic Church and its teachings are. Yes, all churches have this to a degree, but in my church we are encouraged to seek God in our own way. There aren't a list of rules and regs that you MUST follow to be a good church member, so both my husband and I are comfortable being there and exposing our children to this environment.

Well I think any religion with a deep history and specific tenets has this effect. It's just that the Catholic religion overlaps with so many others as they are also Christian. Maybe people don't have the same foundation to criticize Orthodox Judaism or the Muslim religion.

+1. I do have the background to criticize Islam, but I hold back whenever that Muslim Woman person says something misleading (which happens a lot). I don't want to be the only one contradicting her.

Also, OP, I'm not Catholic, but you don't seem very respectful of your husband's childhood faith, even if he's left the church. I hope you don't say these things, in quite such a spiteful way, to his face. Just my two cents.

At least one other PP besides me thinks this is bigotted. Unless she's +1ing herself, two other PPs besides me think this is bigotted. So there's that.

I agree that all catholics cannot be judged by pp's MIL.

OP, you can criticize the Catholic Church all you like, but your posts say WAY more about you. I hope one day you will not be so bitter and spiteful. God bless.

Very typical of any evangelical religion to cheer when they've got a new convert. You've harvested a soul dear, congratulations.

Wow...people on DCUM are really way out of line. I haven't posted in this thread for a while now - I am the poster from Germany.

I am not an atheist.
I am not a Muslim.
I am not Jewish.
I have not posted in any other threads in the religion forum and have never said anything against Christians.
I am not the poster who replied after my post identifying myself as German.

I can NOT believe how many hateful assumptions are being made here. The only thing I have said is instead of focusing on getting each other out of each others religions and trying to get each other into our own religions - why don't we all focus on being as good of a person as we can be and serve God the best we can? That's all I said. I find all the hate quite amusing...it sure doesn't yell "Good Christian" to me.

And just to clarify: I am German. I am catholic. I firmly believe in God - I do not believe in the Church as an institution. I live my life the way I think God wants me to live it. Not the way some church tells me to. And that's what I wish everyone else would do. Then there wouldn't be so much hate and arguing between all the different churches and we could all go back to just being good Christians.

Actually it seems that you have been able to bring together everyone in agreeing we feel bad for your poor husband.

Good job OP. That doesn't happen much here on DCUM.

And it hasn't happened this time either. There is just this one poster who feels the need to project her point of view on "everyone."

Yes, but if you are a Christian, you are talking about only three: Catholicism, and the Greek and Russian Orthodox churches. The rest are Protestant, and one of the main points of the Protestant Reformation was the Priesthood of All Believers. As far as reasons for protestant faiths, it's a pretty big deal, and it means that things like the detailed catechism we all learned don't exist.
